Those of you with Plastidip wheels

Just a quick question for those of you with Plastidip on your wheels...

Does it chip easily?? I love how my stock 4Runner wheels looked when I was done, but they chip way too easily! I was thinking of plastidipping them and then coating them with paint and clear, and wondering how that would hold up??

CUrrently, the paint chips, but the yellow primer I put on stays... so I have yellow showing everywhere there is a chip...

Mine have only been done for a month or so, but haven't shown any signs of chipping, and I've driven on gravel roads as well as through some relatively deep mud. I've also taken it through the do it yourself car washes and powerwashed them clean without issue
To protect the finish, I did do 3-4 coats of clear coat over the plastidip.

i did mine back in early november and ive been offroading in mud gravel snow just about everything multiple times and ive actually been suprised at how well they've held up.. the only chip i have is in the back rear but only because i got sloppy when tightening the lugs back on and it slipped and put a nice chip in it haha

other than that theres no damage or chips or anything and i didnt even do that good of a job when i did them too! i highly advise it i loved how mine turned out

They are incredibly durable. I am shocked by how well mine have held up.

i did mine probably around a year ago and when i did it. I used one can of plastidip for ALL of my tires.. i haven't done ANY touch up since and it still looks pretty good. Ill have to do another coat of it sometime..but thats because since ive done it ive gotten new tires and had tires rotated so there are some chrome spots let out ... Overall its a great thing to use.

Fightman, I have my wheels plasti-dipped then painted and they have been holding up great. I've dropped tire irons on the paint and it dents slightly, but no chipping. The only wear is the edges, but that is because of how I put the 3x5 cards I used when painting.

Well I'm glad it's working out for you guys! I think I'll be going this route with the 05 Taco. I'm planning on stripping both sets of wheels that I have for it, and paint them. SInce the plastidip seems to help with the adhesion... I'm gonna try that!

hey so for you guys with the plasti diped wheels, did you scuff up the rims before you applied the plasti dip?( by scuff i mean i light sand with some 80-180 gt sandpaper) you know for some added adhesion? i painted my old vw bugs wheels like 10 years ago and it chipped like crazy.....

No need to sand with plasti dip since it sticks to itself. Thats whats so awesome about the stuff. The only prep work needed is a good cleaning

I agree with just about everything in here.

when I did my wheels, I did the wheel weights as well. Rebalanced yesterday and had to move one over a bit. I'll let you know how well the recoating matches

edit:^^ I had trouble where it turned white at first, but it's because I hadn't washed it well enough. power washing at the car wash won't peel it off so I do it pretty close and have had no trouble since.

Really great news guys! I''m gonna be taking a wire wheel to mine, as they are pretty corroded, but will definetely coat them with the plastidip and then paint when done! Now to find a good deal on some 33's.....

I'm looking at refinishing my stock rims in the spring, but was leaning more towards rim paint...

Plasti Dip is a durable, yet temporary solution.

When you're ready to go back to stock, you just peel it off.

No muss, no fuss.

Also, its VERY forgiving, and you can get a smooth finish with no paint skills.

And as an added bonus, that satin finish just looks so damn cool.

My first post might be unclear.... but reason being... I painted mine with rim paint and they are chipping like crazy. I used Zinc Primer, Duplicolor base coat, and wheel paint clear coat. The paint chips off, leaving the yellow primer exposed.

I talked to an automotive paint supplier, he advised that I would need a certain kind of paint with hardners in it, for it to be more durable. Unfortunately, it costs $25.00 per can, plus the clear coat which is around the same price, and then it needs to be baked.

Rather than going through all this... I decided to just try the plasti-dip.

For what its worth I had the same experience. East Texas is full of red mud that just sticks. Ended up staining my plasti-dipped and painted wheels. Not to mention all the rocks have done a number on the edges of the wheels. I ended up pulling it all off, which was a HUGE PITA......Going to straight up paint mine now. Wish I would have just done that in the first place. for what it is worth, i may also be stepping way from the black paint just for the simple fact if it chips i dont want to see the silver showing though.

How about painting over the plastidip? That way you can keep the black paint, and if it chips only the plastidip shows through -- like a second coat of armor. Not sure how well paint adheres to plastidip. Not saying I've done it before, but just a thought.

...plus I rather someone else try it first and report back rather than taking the plunge myself.
