Thoughts on 2000 and below or 2001/2002 t4r

So couple months back my 2000 limited was totaled out. After words I thought I would be cheeky and get a Subaru for fuel economy since I am in school but a month later I super mega loath the tutaro, because it has been one mechanical problem after the next. Learned my lesson don't do that again.
So to the meat of my conundrum. I have been looking at 2000/2001/2002 t4r and wanted to know what everyone's opinion was on the 2000 having the traditional t-case and the 2001/2002 having the center locking diff. I know the 00/02 lack the locking rear diff but the newer ones are still 3rd gen and so good trucks.

Mostly depends

on what you plan to do with it. Serious off-roading may require that rear locker. Then again many on here make do without it. I make do with the center locker, yeah not near the same but if you plan ahead and use the tools ya got, it can work out ok. Luck deciding!

You're totaled 2000 Limited, had a Multi-Mode T-case. Which had a lockable differential AKA center locking diff. The '99-'00 Limited models were the only models in those years, that had a Multi-Mode T-case.

I know the 00/02 lack the locking rear diff but the newer ones are still 3rd gen and so good trucks.

2000 was the last year for availability of the rear diff locker.

'01-'02 lacked the availability of the rear diff locker.

Thanks for the feed back youall. I'm not really planing on doing moab but to be able to handle some of the trails in CO would be what im after. Newer truck would be nice but that locker in the 2000 was sexy.

99-00's don't have the electronic baby sitters that the 01-02 have. IMO it would come down to price/mileage/overall condition.

Here in CO most of the offroading is rock crawling. If you get her to flex out and tire come off with an open diff your stuck. If you flex out and tires come off that rear locker really helps keep you going. I make it with open diffs since I have the rear end really flexing good which keeps me planted but there are times I would really love to have that locker.

I would get a '99 or '00 with the rear locker.

I live near Springs so when I head that way I hit trails that are rated 5-7 usually because they are fun. But its not even funny how many trails are near there. Here is a great map.

I agree in most cases. I grew up here. But this is a 4runner not a car. That baby is low miles & garage kept.
I used to commute into Manhattan working nights with my truck & it eats up NYC potholes like no other vehicle.

Yea, & its a private seller not a dealer adding a grand to the price. I dont like that chewed up leather drivers seat either. Be patient.

That's kind of what I was thinking the seats a little nackered and it's more then likely a trade in that they paid 45-5100 for so wouldnt even consider un tell around 6500 or less. But still have to get this silly tutaru gone first then 4runner time.

Condition of the 4runner in question is probably going to trump your original question. Given the age of our trucks, finding a gem of any year is going to be more important than any particular set of options. If I ever lose my truck, I'm just going to wait and find one off the classifieds here. Babied and built already.

This is true really, about the only condition issue id be willing to deal with would be the condition of the seat in the truck I posted here earlier. Well that and a few odds and ends like a clock. Those lockers are handy when you need them though. But of course within reason I am honestly whiling to travel to find one, just hoping not to far.
