Thoughts on a Battery...

I'm going to have to buy one soon. Any thoughts. 99 Limited 4x4. It will be back east soon and dealing with cold winters when the wife can't drive her SUV because it gets stuck in anything other than an inch of snow :dammit:.

I was looking at a Red Top Optima, is it worth spending the money on or just getting one from O'Reilly's or Autozone.

Get the DieHard Platinum from Sears. Deep cycle power, and outperforms an optima in just about every category. Plus it's cheaper and has a better warranty.
 
^ I don't know if it's cheaper...? The Die Hard Plat is around $220 unless you find it on sale. A friend of mine got one on sale for $155 which was a fantastic price. If you can't find the DH on sale you could go for a Duralast Platinum which is AGM style as well. They run around $150.
 
Odyssey or DH Platinum for sure. Expensive as hell but mine has handled everything that's been thrown at it. Grant it, I'm on 2nd one cus my first one was a lemon but this one has been going strong for a while. Plus, 4 year warranty = badass.

That Die Hard Platinum is looking pretty good. when you fig in the warranty it is not a bad price(197 online and pick up in store) That 100 month Pro Rating is nice as well. I know Costco offers that but I do not think it is 100 months and I think it is only 3 years.

I bought a Yellow Top from Amazon only to read a week later that they have no warranty support .... doh.

The SEARS Die Hard Platinum is pretty well respected on the Forum. I have owned 2 Optimas in a row and have been very unimpressed. I would not buy one or recommend them to a friend.
 
My vote is also for Die Hard. Every car I've owned, I immediately went out and bought a Die Hard. Never had a problem with them.
 
I second Hawker Odyssey

Bought mine from Batterymart.com and absolutely love it. Cost me $260 but it was money well spent. With warranty also. I'd consider upgrading terminals and cables also if necessary. Good luck with whatever you purchase.
 
I got 7 years off my factory Panasonic. Wish they sold those in the US.

I got less than 5 years off my Optima Red Top, and it was a Made in USA. It cost $160 or a little over $30 per year.

I currently have 3 years on a Costco Group 35 that cost $75 or $25 per year and still going strong.

I believe the Platinum Die-Hard/Odyssey's are the best out there but I can't justify the cost. I can tell when a battery is going. I'd rather keep buying CostCo batteries at $75 per than spend the bucks for an Odyssey. They start just the same. I don't have a huge accessory load--if I did, that might change my thinking.
 
Well

After looking at them all and taking into account what will be close to me for warranty/ replacement I now have a Diehard Platinum under the hood. 4 Years and 100 month is nice. 800CCA will also be nice come winter time and the deep cycle times sold me. No dead battery after running the tunes while washing the runner.:reddance:

That was one of the choices but it lost in the end because the closest on will be over three hours once I leave the People Communist Republic of California, I'm looking forward to getting back to America. Where people wave at you when you drive by and you know everyone who lives on the whole street (all three of them).

Just my opinion but I'd have to disagree here. All battery brands have duds and once you've experienced a dud you are likely never to buy that brand again. I have a friend who has a Honda Accord. He went through 2 Kirkland batteries in 3 years. They just died for no reason. Bought a made in Mexico Optima and had no issues after that.

So, besides the fact that I'll never buy anything but a gel type battery again, if I did have to buy a slosher, I wouldn't want it to be a Kirkland.

But at least with the Costco battery you can take it right back and get a brand new one if it happened with a year or so.
I ve been using them for about 6 years now with no issues.

Yep I agree, every brand makes good ones for the most part. I'm just saying you'll always find someone who doesn't trust Kirkland or Interstate or Everstart etc.... They're all made by the same big 3 so they must be all good in general. I believe if you buy a higher end battery like an AGM/gel type you'll have less chances for duds.

You'd think, but there are LOTS of dud stories about OPTIMA's out there, especially the Made in Mexico. This is not true of Die-Hard Platinum Odyssey's. So if I went AGM, I'd go Odyssey/Die-Hard.

LOL, yeah Optima is trying to be a second rate AGM according to the online ramblings these days. I have been involved in 3 made in Mexico Optima red top purchases. I still have one of them in my wifes Mazda. None had any issues in the first few years...? They were all just starter duty though, nothing too taxing.

I currently own two AutoZone Duralast Platinums. Had them for about 1.5 years now. No issues yet but who knows...
