Thoughts on a new daily driver?

EDIT: Post updated below.....just purchased new/used car.

So the wife has pretty much taken over the 2011 LE 4Runner as her daily driver and my 1979 Jeep CJ5 (pictured below) isn't gonna work out as a daily driver after all (I used 4 gallons of gas to/from work the other day - 22 mile round trip drive).

In short, I'm looking for other options for a daily driver......anyone got any ideas? Vehicle doesn't need to be fuel efficient in the sense of great MPG (15-20mpg range will work).

I was looking at 2007+ Tacoma's but I'm trying to stay under a $15k budget. Don't really want a car, so truck and SUV's is the market I'm looking at currently.

Thoughts?

My GF is looking at buying a new Lexus soon so hopefully I'll be modding and driving her 3rd Gen Limited in the very near future.:artist2:

Well, since you live in paradise, a 22 mile bicycle commute sounds perfect. If you need a vehicle for work, get a nice used Taco, or 3rd gen and leave it at the office.
Last time I checked,bi-cycles are still cheaper than bi-passes.
 
Well there's 2 schools of thought

1. You spend a lot of time in your daily driver (hence the daily part) so get something really nice, especially interior.. say CTS, or if that's a bit too big, or you prefer imports, Lexus makes great value smaller luxury cars

2. You put a lot of miles on your daily driver, so get something super efficient, say a hybrid, or something really small like a Yaris.

My personal favorite daily driver would be a VW Golf TDI. They have great mileage, and I actually think the interiors are pretty nice, look a lot like Audi. (Note that is is not an endorsement of VW in general, I would highly recommend not buying ANY other VW, even a non TDI golf, as their overall quality and reliability is quite low outside of the german built models)
 
So I almost bought a 2006 Scion today......good thing I played Mr. Investigator today because the owner lied about collision (carfax didn't show any accidents either) however the car was totaled in the front of the tune of $5,200. Dealer showed the vehicle being brought in for collision so after a few phone calls, the truth came out and when I questioned the owner, all I got was a blank stare! Lil POS F@wker........

Anyway, I've looked at a couple Tacoma's, none of which were worth paying the price on pre-2002 with over 130k each (average seller wanted $12k for a pre-2003 with over 100k.

Still looking.......any other ideas fellas/ladies? :thanks:
 
if you want something you can beat to death, is simple and gets good gas milage get a 1st or 2nd G Honda CR-V or pre-2007 Subaru Impreza. I own four vehicles - My '11 4Runner, 2009 CRV (wifes), 2005 CRV (daughters) and a 2007 Subaru Impreza (sons). All vehicles are tough to beat and the Subaru gets about 27 mpg. I got it last year for 11K with 40K miles.

The all new Ford Boss302 is a great choice for your daily commute: 24+ mpg, so less than 1 gal/day! You will, very likely, save a ton of time as well because this thing can beat the britches off an BMW M3.

Second best, 2010 Taco 4 cyl 5 spd prerunner, 20+ in city likely 25+HW. My son has one and it's a really good vehicle, decent power too. I really enjoy driving his truck. Should be about $16-19K.

Wife stole the new 4runner too, but I am happy driving my 09 taco double cab. Great vehicle, gets about 21 mpg.

Ya, I wish mine didn't but when I move in January for a year to Washington state solo she will need it to tote the 115 lb Argentinian Mastiff to/from dog park.

Well here's what I ended up with......stuck with Toyota/Scion brand since they are reliable.

Year: 2008
Make/Model: Scion TC
Tranny: Manual
Milage: 32,000
Paid: $14,000

Car is in really good condition, no major scratches or dings. Ended up spending 2 days (after work) detailing (Claybar, wash, wax, interior detailing). Just dropped it off at the local detailing shop to have the seats shampoo'd as they were the only thing inside that need professional cleaning.

I never thought I'd be a guy who like the Auto Tuner cars, but man this thing is peppy and fun to drive. Bad part though is all the tuner toys that are available for this. Already eyeballing some new tail lights, fog lights and a few other cosmetic upgrades.

that's what I came from; 06 tc with 65kmi on the clock. Good little car, build quality is no where near as nice as the 4runner, but a good choice for a DD.

Protect that paint! Has the same toyota quality with the ability to chip easily.... :rant:
