Thoughts on crawl control.

i just saw the video of it...impressive!! glad to have it on the 4runner.
 
I used it for the first time a few weeks ago while descending 1000 ft in less than 3/4 of a mile on loose sand/dirt and rock.

I was impressed!
 
Crawl is awesome and I consider it among the most important assets I have when offroading. A few weeks ago I used it to ascend a muddy hill with some built jeeps. They all were spinning out and occasionally had to reverse to get another start on the more difficult patches. Meanwhile my T4R calmly and quickly cruised up the hill.

When I use mine I always engage it in the 3 position. Less noise and jerk starting off, and i just adjust the speed with the dial as needed after rolling off.

Remember the numbered positions are speed in Kilometers per hour. So at the highest setting you are still only rolling at about 3 mph.
 
I absolutely couldn't get up this snot mud hillside in Colorado miles away from anyone....until I put it in CraWL CoNtroL!!! Went right up like a BOSS.

Same here, first time i tried it out was prob in the same spot you tried it out. Coming down the backside towards the reservoir?
 
I tested mine out for the first time yesterday and I was really impressed as well. I can't wait until I get to a trail that is seriously steep where I can really put it to use. Only bummer is other people on the trail will probably think you are tearing your truck up because it sounds so terrible when that ABS braking kicks in but man does it work well. I am not sure I will ever find a place I can't go in this thing.
 
When i was doing a little trail driving a month ago, i put my SR5 in 4Lo and turned on the Hill Decent...and to my surprise, along with all of the noisyness, it rolled both up and down the small inclines i was encountering. It was only moving at around 1-4mph, but it was still doing it on its own...all i had to do was steer.

shortly after that, i read a thread where someone put it out there that the hill decent was basically crawl control with only ONE speed.


any truth to that...or did i just get lucky on that particular day?:suspicious:

Does your car move forward on flat ground or up a hill, obviously not just the idle of the engine but in a controlled state?

as a matter of fact, it did. i was surprised by it.

then again, it could have been the idle and i am just an idiot...

Well, next time your at enough of a hill to stop you just idling, click it on and see what happens. I know that only the trails have crawl control, but who knows hill descent control could also be hill ascent control? And if not, oh well haha.
 
used it for the first time at my friends property in Boerne Tx. started on flat ground at the base of one of their steeper hill climbs. no mud, just dirt and loose rock.
flat ground + L crawl setting = damn near had a BM when all the clunking and grinding started.
i was very impressed going both up and down, 0 slip just a smooth constant crawl speed. just steer and go!

In the clip below you can see how jerky it gets when engaged on flat ground but as the grade got stepper the crawl control worked really well!! The Gopro stopped recording near the end of the decline which would have been cool to share as it was STEEP!! I didn't have to ride my brakes either like the SR5 in front.

Technically you are riding your brakes going downhill with Crawl Control. It is just being done intermittently using the ABS system.

In Moab this year, my buddy found it interesting that the brake lights were coming on as I was climbing hills with Crawl Control. Usually don't see that.
 
Finally got a chance to put Crawl Control to a test on Imogene Pass in Colorado. I am now a believer. Pretty steep and a little wet but experienced no slippage or sliding downhill.

I keep it at the highest speed when engaging it, and then turn it down to suit. If you leave the dial in the lowest setting and engage, you will get the jerky movement you mention. I use it mostly for descending steep trails

Me too. It's amazing on steep declines as the lower settings are slower than 1st gear in 4LO. I've used Multi-terrain Select once but didn't understand what it was really doing so I usually don't use it.
