Thoughts on crawl control.

It is if you hit something unexpected, hard.

I dropped a wheel into a hole at about 15mph and my thumb was black/blue and in a lot of pain. Taco'd the wheel, ripped the tire, bent upper/lower control arms, broke steering rack, etc
 
How come we can't get this blue on a 4Runner?

What were you driving? In the 29 years I've been wheeling I have never had that happen to me. All that other stuff you mentioned is irrelevant :)
On my unimog it's happened. A lot. Kick the wheel. Never on al the power steering vehicles I've owned.

2011 4runner TE. Was pulling off of a dirt road, cresting a slight hill, so I couldn't see a washed out hole a few feet deep. Instantly stopped my front left wheel.

Agreed that the power steering system provides enough damping that injury is incredibly unlikely, under normal circumstances.

I didn't realize that. I learned to keep my thumbs out on my non-power steering '82 Toyota SR5 and have always kept them there on all remaining vehicles I've owned. I didn't know it wasn't that much of a factor with power steering.
 
I have a 2013 TE and this past weekend went out with a group. It did really well but I tried using crawl control to go down a steep slope which was a bit wet due to recent rain a little earlier. It started off going down fine even if it was a bit scary trusting it however when it got a bit steeper and started to lose traction sliding forward it would like sped up then slow down again and each time it slows too much and would start to slide then it would repeat after about the third time I was really moving and I thought screw this and took control and made it down.
Is crawl control not meant for downhill or did I do something wrong?
 
I use it on DHs all the time but I haven't on wet surfaces. The owner's manual Caution statement does say to not overly rely on CC and it may not be suitable for all situations.
