Toyota E-locker rear & front diff

I'm interested in this e-locker axle. Problem is, I would not be able to go look at it until next thursday, by which time I'm sure it would be long gone. I have the manual with 4.10 gears so this is a rare and extremely easy swap for me.

I can send my friend to go look at it and purchase it for me. He has a lot of experience with cars in general, but not much about toyota specific stuff.

The seller claims that these came out of his 4runner with 165,000 km (not miles) as he swapped them out for 4.30 axles. It seems like a lot of trouble to go from 4.10 to 4.30 gears, but whatever. He seemed fairly knowledgable when I talked to him and said he could plug this axle into his 4runner and actuate the locker to prove that it works.

Overall, this axle appears to have less rust than mine does, and it would be fairly easy to clean up and repaint when it's out of the truck. Not to mention, it has almost 200,000 fewer km than my truck/axle. However, I am concerned about the rust on the motor/actuator. Does this look like a problem to anyone?

He is asking $650 which seems pretty average for an elocker axle. Keep in mind this is the west coast where the price of all toyota stuff is inflated.

What are your thoughts on this?

If he plugs it in and it works your good on the actuator. Be warned I picked up a 4.30 rear e-locker assembly, popped it out after i was long gone to clean the inside and give it a good inspection and 3 of the teeth were chipped Guy swore he had already been through it and it was in great shape. I still feel the burn. Id have him pop it out of the housing and inspect the gears for wear. Id also ask around about how to inspect the gears in the clam shell. Cost me $300 bucks. and I have a pretty anchor.

This is why I'm hesitant to buy used diffs. Pulling the pumpkin off would definitely be out of the question for my friend who would be looking at it, so I would be taking a chance on some level.

How about asking the seller to pull the pumpkin off, take several good pics to demonstrate its in good shape? If he balks, offer a few extra bucks for the hastle, I'd pay say $20 extra to Know that for certain. Just a crazy thought....Luck!
