Throttle body sticking...

So after getting terrible mileage this winter on highway and city, 10-14mpg, I decided to go through all the fixes I heard about. Went to pick up and O2 sensor and found it was an NTK unit so I held off. I then bought a couple cans of throttle body cleaner and MAF cleaner. Took intake apart and removed MAF. The tiny wires inside looked a little dirty, 98 runner fo actual sensor can be removed, hosed this thing off with cleaner until they looked as clean as I could get them.

Next I used TB cleaner on the TB. To say my TB was dirty was an understaement. I could write my name on the butterfly it was so covered in goo. With a tooth brush and TB cleaner I went to town and got it spic and span. Started engine a few times to dry it out and clean it again and again until fluid ran clear after a thurough hosing.

I put everything back together and start truck. Idled high...drove around idled even higher. 3000rpm high. I'd try to kick it down like I was doing beofre and it would only drop to 2500 at best. Back in the garage it went and found my TB buttlerfly wasn't closing all the way. Not sure why.

I noticed some side to side play on the butterfly spindle but holding the spindle doesn't seem to help it return. Next I added an additnional spring to the TB to pull the butterfly closed. Success....this left me with a stiff pedal though and really hasn't fixed the problem.

I've tried to clean the linkage while on the truck but haven't dissassembled anything yet. My attempt tonight will be to pull everthing off the spindle and clean and inspect. so if there is any spot I can lube it to allow it to move freely and not hang up on me.

Anyone else run into this?

You didn't by chance undo the throttle or transmission throttle (kickdown) cables did you? You may have some slack/too much tension in the lines causing a bad idle or the valve to stick. Also, the reason for the stiff pedal is bc of the additional spring making it harder to open the valve. I'd remove it if you find a different fix.

Yes I know the additional spring is causing my stiff pedal. Thats why im hoping to find something else.

My truck is a manual so no kickdown that I'm aware of. Truck has about 200k miles on it now.

Make sure the vacuum hose to the throttle-opener thingy on the front of the TB is firmly on the nipple. Mine was just resting ON the nipple, not pushed on, and it took me a month to figure out my high idle. Check for other leaks as well.

If that doesn't do it, look at this.

Gunk from the cleaning in your IAC can cause high idle, but not because the butterfly can't close.
