On the 1985-87 code 11-TPS and on the 1988-85 4-Runner/Pickup code 51=TPS.
Before you replace it clean the throttle body,to clean the throttle body remove the air intake hose and examine the intake and throttle body for excessive carbon build if found then buy a can of throttle body cleaner labeled "safe on oxygen sensor and catalytic converters" and make sure your engine is fully warmed up prior to using as when the throttle body is hot it dissolves the carbon easily and quickly.The labels usually specify to park the vehicle at groung level (0 degrees,no inclination) and have the engine running but I disagree I instead park the vehicle on a hill facing down and shut the engine off and hold a rag below the lip of the throttle body and poor the
stuff and use a tooth brush.
If code and/or problem remains then replace the TPS,the TPS is probably one of the worst parts to replace on a vehicle as before replacing it you are suppose to take resistance measurements of each of the 4 points and write them down on a piece of paper then install the new one and adjust the new one to have the same resistance values and to assist you the factory service manual has several pages dedicated to adjusting the TPS.
Note:after I replaced the TPS on my 85 4-Runner several years ago the idle would fluctuate up & down as well the engine was running hot as it turned out the computer could not set base time (5 degreess BTDC with check engine/timing connector shorted and 8 BTDC without) and the computer retarded the timing by 10 full degrees,yes that's right so you will need a timing light.
To verify this take a DMM (digital multi-meter) and measure all of the voltages on the ECU (EFI computer) both with the engine running and with the engine off but the ignition switch on and compare with the values in the FSM (factory service manual) and also close the ignition switch and take resistance measurements and compare with the book.This is the technique that I use when repairing tv's,vcr's,home/car audio equipment.
For future reference and for everyone else's knowledge I have included a list of sites that will aid everyone in pulling the ECU codes,it is good to have some of these printed and stored in your glove compartmemt.
Before removing TPS spray both TPS screws with any of the following deep penetrating oils for several hours before removing:
1)AeroKroil Oil (from Kanolabs)
2)PB Blaster
3)Liquid Wrench
4)Toyota Rust Penetrant or High Performance Penetrating lube
5)Rust Check
About half of the ECU codes stored on the first & second generation EFI Toyotas don't show a constant blinking check engine light therefore you must pull the ECU codes to see if a fault is registered but when an oxygen sensor is bad it usually does not trip an ECU code but they can be tested as they get lazy.
