Throttle Position Sensor

I replaced the TPS on my 2000 4Runner. Turned the engine on and the light came back on. Is it normal for the light to come back on when you replace the sensor?

Try having it cleared out first. Auto zone should be able to clear it out for you. I take it you had an intial reading that told you to replace the TPS sensor??

Check engine light came on with the code for the TPS. Called the closest Toyota dealer and they wouldn't sell me one. Ordered one from Advanced Auto. Waited till a friend got home last night and hooked up to his scanner. The new TPS wasn't even registering, even with the pedal to the floor the TPS still read 0. Put the Toyota part back on and it was reading fine. Returning the part to Advance Auto. Will try another Toyota dealer for a TPS.

thats wierd. I replaced mine, with one from advanced auto parts, light went off right when i started it up. Sounds like you got a defective one or something

did you take the battery lead off before you replaced the tps? i had mine replaced with a toyota oem sensor, it was easy as a pie.

isconnect the hot wire on the battery for a couple of minutes - it should reset the computer...

We cleared the code with the scanner and it came right back on. TPS meter on the scanner constantly read 0 no matter how far down the pedal was pushed. Bad part. Put the original back on and ordered a Toyota OEM online.

Hi Rob96, Have you successfully replaced the TPS? I am planning to install a new one but don't have an idea on this. Hope you can gave me a procedure for installation. Thanks for any tip.

Just take the throttle body off (4 bolts/nuts). It's screwed into the throttle body with 2 screws and make sure you don't strip them. If you do (like I did one) use a vice grips to take it out and put it back in. Pay attention to the spring inside, you have to put it in sideways and then turn against the spring to line up the holes, I just don't remember which direction you turn it. Should be pretty self-explainatory once you have it in your hands. Take the time to clean the throttle body while you have it out and also the IAC (which is also attached to the TB). There are a few write-ups for cleaning the IAC.
