Throttle Position Sensor

i received in the mail today my new Throttle Position Sensor. This is for a 2001. I am not 100% sure it will work. When i tried to order it from a Toyo dealer they only show this part for 96-2000 models, not the 01 or 02. I ordered the part = which when you search for T4R comes up as for 98-04 Tacoma.

Has anyone ever installed a new TPS or know how to do it?

I am trying to fix a sticking gas pedal. It is not sticking like the recall models and ours are not included in the recall. Mine is sticking as in it takes an effort to get going from a stop.

My mechanic took off the throttle body. There is nothing wrong with it. He said i could order a new throttle body - which is real expensive - or just try to replace the TPS.

That mechanic sounds like a jack ass. He told you that you could replace the throttle body, but why? Then he said replace the TPS, but why? The TPS is spring loaded, but I don't see that being the likely cause of a sticking gas pedal. What the mechanic should have done in 10 minutes is take the throttle body off in order to remove the TPS and he could have seen if the TPS is bound up. It's just 2 screws that hold the TPS to the TB.

He should have also tested the voltage from the TPS to see if it's working before he recommended you buying a new one. Sounds like this mechanic is just a parts changer to me.

If your pedal is sticking, my guess would be the cable. I don't know if the later 3rd gens are throttle-by-wire or not like the later tacos, but if it is, maybe the servo is sticking.

He checked the cable, the cable is fine. He took off the throttle body, cleaned it, checked it out. I guess I could try to put on the new TPS and if that doesn't cure it, have to find a new mechanic or take it to the stealership

Sounds like the way mine was sticking. Really hard to push down from a stop, and seems way too heavy.

It's the cable. You can't tell by just looking at it. I took all the cables that attach to the TB off, took the rubber ends off, and sprayed silicone spray down into each cable. I kinda worked it around to be sure the silicone was getting everywhere down in the cable sheath. Worked like a charm, no more sticky throttle.

I don't see how the TPS can cause a sticky accelerator pedal. I agree that it's the cable.

You can easily tell what is binding by disconnecting the throttle cable from the throttle linkage and moving the throttle by hand. That guy must be a real dufus.

Our throttle cable is binding too. Must be a common problem with these 3rd gens. Anybody have a link for a new cable at a good price? Don't see them on ebay.

i am finding new throttle cable on partznet for about $58 but it is showing only for 01-02 WITHOUT cruise control. how easy is it to change this cable yourself?

and what exactly does the TPS do. Is it an item that wears out? I paid $50 for the TPS. Should i install it, or should i just return it? How long would an original one last anyway?

I tried to take off the old TPS and install the new one but i need a really short screwdriver so i am going to have to go to the hardware store first.

I am not a mechanic. I can only try my best. I also don't intend to ask stupid questions.
