thumping and not engaging in drive

Been bothered with my 08 4R sports ed(21K miles) :
1. A thump(actually hear and feel) when stepping off the brakes & before putting my foot to the gas pedal. Dealer tells me it's a normal thing...
2. Experienced a few times that my drive gear did not engage(big delay than normal) when shifting from rear to drive. I'm sure the dealer will tell me it engages into drive normally since it only happed several times on me... Could my transmission fluid be low??

I've heard some comments/advice from this the forum in the past, but could someone help update me with some good advice/tip?

Sounds like the infamous driveshaft thump to me...

1) thumps an easy fix. Don't let the dealer do the lube job. They don't put enough in and charge for something that shouldn't need charging. Read the links that CJ3Flyer gave you. It's easy to do. 8-10 pumps should suffice. Someone are more aggressive.

2) I've read this. I think it was the tranny fluid level. Possibly Computer needs an update as well.

Took my 07 2wd in last week for these same problems that had progressively been getting worse. Being 2wd I don't have all the same "possible culprits" that have been mentioned except the computer needing to be "upgraded." However the guy at the dealership said I had the easiest fix all day.... my license plate tag holder was loose. I'm like, sure, whatever, I'm sure i'll be back tomorrow but seriously it was much better. Now do I believe he has a magic screwdriver?? No. Do I think they just did a quickie fix to the computer and didn't tell me in light of all the recent controversy? Yes. So far so good with it. Also helped with the issue I have had with the truck lurching forward when the a/c compressor clicks off when at a stop. I figured I wouldn't call him on it but file it away for future use if needed and just let him keep thinking I'm some gullible chick.

When AC compressor cycles on causing you to lurch forward (or feeling like getting hit from behind) when you're completely stopped is "normal" on the 4th gen 4Runner and 2nd gen Tacoma. I've experienced it happen on both of mine along with others. The only solution is to step on the brakes firmer.

Thanks guys. Sounds like the lube job will be a quick fix and I guess it's one of those infamous driveshaft thump in the 4Rs so I'm not too worried... But sort of still worried about the very few experiences on the gear shifting from rear to drive and the drive not engaging at normal timing (more than 3-4 seconds in engaging to drive). What's the mileage you guys recommend to change your tranny oil? My 08 V6 only has 21K miles, is it time to change or simply add the fluid? Hope this tranny fluid will solve my worries on the drive gear engaging at a normal interval... Thanks again guys!
