thumping when turning

Hey everyone,
I will be going like 10 MPH or 15 MPH (like going through a parking lot) I'll see a spot and hit the break and turn the wheel pretty hard to turn into the spot at the last minute. When I do that, I hear a thumping noise coming from the front wheels. It almost sounds like the wheel nuts arent in tight enough but that is not the case, they are. Any ideas? Kinda annoying...

Are you sure the front tires aren't sliding and the VSC system isn't kicking in? (It has sensors that detect steering position versus direction of travel.) Is the Skid indicator lamp lighting up?

Doesn't it beep when VSC kicks in? I've only experienced it once when it snowed and I was tooling around in a parking lot. Forgot to lock the center diffy.

Maybe there is something loose. Is it both wheels or just one?
 
If you are hitting the brakes and turning at the same time, its very possible its ABS kicking on. I've noticed on the 4th gen 4runners the ABS sounds like a thud with a springy sound to it. VSC has a light that comes on (no beep) when activated, ABS does not.

If it was something like loose wheel nuts, you'd feel it at higher speeds.
 
If you are hitting the brakes and turning into the spot at the same time, maybe it is the traction control kicking in. I was once making a turn at about 10 mph and then accelerated and I heard a thump coming from the front. I look down at my dash and there is that orange light flashing. Next time, look if any lights are flashing when this it happens. I don't think it would be loose lugnuts because as CMiYC said, you would hear it at faster speed.
 
no orange lights and its not one thud.. its multiple small thuds... like maybe even a grinding when the wheels is turned too much. But it cant be that it is at max turn, its enough turn that it puts strain on something up there to make that sound. sounds like loose lugs but they are tight.... :( :confused: :wtf: :help:
 
Another thought just came to my mind. It could be that something is caught in your wheelwell and it is rubbing everytime you turn that certain way. Do you realize it turning left or right or both?
 
you know what...i've heard it twice while making U-turns in both directions. i've only heard it twice and it has never happened again. both times i turned the wheel all the way, and the U-turns were at about 10mph. i was going to take it in to the dealer, but i cannot recreate the noise. :confused:
 
If it was the AWD V8 or you had your V6 in 4wd at the time it would be the clutches in the front differential. (normal) Take it too the dealer and see what they find.
 
I've heard it too. I asked the dealer a few weeks ago about it and he said that I am simply turning the wheel too far. Since then, I have heard it again when the wheel wasn't at max turn.

I'm just going by what i'm feeling, example. When I backout of my garage in the morning I take a sharp full right hand turn. I get a feeling from the front wheels that is the same that you get from a limited slip rearend that doesn't have enough "limited slip additive" it is kind of a sutter. Now later in the day after all of the fluids are warmed up and I do the samething it doesn't sutter. Same as a limited slip rearend that warms up and does not sutter. Normally they wear in and everything is smooth. I'm not concerned, figure I will change the front diff. fluid at 15K, plus I have a 60K mile drivetrain warranty and if it is still doing it at 40-50K miles I will complain :) and have Toyota do something.
 
happens in both directions and I can recreate it with no problem.

trance, pull into a parking spot, but make sure the truck is moving pretty well when u do it. you dont have to cut it all the way, just enough to get you in the spot from a pretty good angle.

I'm still sticking with ABS. Have you ever driven a vehicle with ABS brakes before? I know some people think something is wrong when they kick in. You might try finding some wet pavement, speeding up, and slamming on the brakes to see if its the same noise. I've only heard it a few times in the 4runner. I previously said thud with springy sound. Another way to describe it would be it sounds like the brake pads are sticking and unsticking to the rotor. (Which isn't a surprise since that's what ABS does...)

If you're going fast and turning quickly its 1 of 2 things... ABS or 4WD. Since you're hitting the brakes and turning at the same, I'm leaning on ABS.

Its Not ABS.. it happen this morning when i was doing it on purpose turning into the parking lot when i wasnt hitting the break.
 
wasn't there a tsb or something about something on the front suspension when a wheel was turned all the way. I vaguely remember that. but don't have access to the techinfo site at the moment...anyone?
 
My very first post... We had the same problem, and brought it to the dealer. They said that there was a tsb on it and that it was the body mount. So far since haven't had the sound since we've got it back...
