ticking in the morning

I have noticed a medium ticking when first started on cold mornings. Goes away after a few minutes. From the motor bay and only when cold. I have an 08 ltd v8. Ideas?

Most likely the belt...I have the same issue sometimes. Its caused by the moisture. Spray some WD-40 or penetration oil on like one pulley and it'll be gone.

It also could be a cracked exhaust manifold like many of us V8 owners have. I haven't heard any belts ever making a ticking noise before either?

Sounds more like a valve tick to me. May need to have them adjusted or just live with it.

How many miles if it close to or over 100k I am going to put my money on the manifold alot of people have this issue with the v8

Member idrivat4r had part of his evap system replaced it was making a ticking sound to his was also around the same mileage could be that as well?

You are describing exactly the symptoms of a craked exhaust manifold. I'm trying to consolidate the information on how many are seeing this problem but its a bit difficult. See these other threads and vote on the poll I posted!

My ticking was caused by a bad Fuel Pulsation Dampener according to the Toyota Tech. I thought mine was an exhaust manifold crack cause the symptoms seemed related but thankfully it wasn't. (Mine will probably go after my warranty expires) Toyota also replaced my Fuel pump because it was supposedly not keeping pressure after the vehicle was turned off.

The Fuel pulsation dampener is located on the top of the engine on the driver side where the fuel line inlet hose is. It dampens the fuel pressure so all injectors receive the same amount of fuel. With a bad Pulsation dampener, some cylinders can receive too little fuel and I think that's where my ticking/pinging was coming from. The noise I heard sounded like it was from the passenger side and only at start up when placed in gear. Once I accelerate, the noise would go away, was only heard at idle until the engine warmed up all the way.

My first guess is cracked exhaust manifold.
cut a piece of tubing and use it like a stethoscope. Roam around the engine bay to try and identify the source.

I have an 08 V8 4R and I have the same problem. Medium ticking sound first thing in the morning, cold start. Really hear it when I put the car in reverse to back out of the driveway first thing in the morning. It goes away pretty quickly.

If it is a cracked exhaust manifold, what are the long term implications if I don't address it? Sucks that my car is just out of warranty 38k. Wonder if I can press the dealer to do anything. :toilet3:

Here's another vote for a cracked exhaust manifold.

If it's valve clatter..that should only last a few seconds...If exhaust manifold then it could last for a couple minutes until the manifold heats up and the metal expands closing the crack.

Not much really. If it gets much worse where it never stops ticking even after it warms up..then I'd really be concerned.

Went two days without repro. Repro'ed this morning, it was 45 deg... Didn't have enough time to troubleshoot, I'll try again tomorrow morning. Thanks for the ideas.

My V6 has a ticking noise on the driver side of the engine, its there from startup to shutdown though, has ticked since the day we got it with 9K miles. Luckily I got a 100K 7 year warranty, its about to go in for a few things and I'll mention the ticking noise and other TSB's like the sulfur smell along with it (reaks in the cabin if you open the rear window!)

The V6 is just noisy fuel injection thats all... The V8's like we are talking about have a problem with cracked manifolds not V6's

If it is the manifold, it is covered under the emissions warranty. Which I believe is good up to 80k miles.
