Ticking noise from transmission getting worse :/

Info:

1996 5speed SR5
240k miles
115k miles on transmission (toyota owners says "MANUAL TRANS REPAIRS ~|~CUSTOMER REQUESTS WE INSTALL A USED TRANSMISSION/TRANSFER CASE ASSEMBLY")

I do have a leak in the power steering rack, and unfortunately the reservoir has been empty int he past. For now I am refilling it as needed.

And the rest of the 4runner is quite stock.

The ticking noise sounds like it is coming from the transmission, and it happens now when i rev up the motor or in gears with acceleration. The noise tends go away when not under load. And it is progressively getting louder.


My driving habits tend to be on the aggressive side. Usually when cold, I have issues engaging 1st 2nd and reverse gears, but once warmed up that isnt an issue anymore.

I also live in a hilly part of seattle.

Get an inexpensive stethoscope from harbor freight and listen (while safely parked) to various points on trans and transfer case. That will narrow it down. Could simply be a stretched chain in the transfer case. :cowboy:

5 speeds dont have flex plates.

No its not useless, just need to know how to use it. Dont worry about searching as only autos have flexplates. I guess it does sound like the auto trans flexplate issue. Could be any of the gears, synchros or maybe a cracked flywheel. But the flywheel is a lot beefier than the flexplate and ive not seen one fail like the autos FP on the 3rd gen yet.

Does it make the noise with the clutch pedal pushed in (and parked)? If so, that would eliminate the gearbox/TC (4WD?) as the source of noise.
