Ticking/Rattling Sound In Exhaust

4R has 9,500 miles on it.

Got home from work yesterday, and as I got out (4R still running), I noticed a rattling/ticking sound right below my driver side door, down around where the manifold/cat is. I shut the car off, and upon starting it back up again, heard the exact same thing. After running around a bit yesterday evening, I've noticed that it happens from the moment I turn the car on, till the moment I turn it off. It doesn't variate and can be drowned out if I rev. I never hear it from the inside of the car. I was beginning to think it might be the exhaust hitting off a heat shield. However, this morning, once I got to work, I walked back behind the truck and listened in the exhaust pipe. To my dismay, I could hear a click/tick in the exhaust ever so often.

RPM doesn't fluctuate, I haven't noticed any change in performance.

I have searched on the forums all day, and I've seen old posts from 2007-2011 talking about the "Toyota tick", but I'm not sure these correlate to what I'm hearing. Oil was changed at 1,500 and then 5,000. It will probably be heading in for its 10,000 in a couple weeks.

Anyone seen this before? I've never noticed this prior.

You might need to bring it to the dealer. They will claim that they don't notice anything. You gotta tell them you want to test drive the car with the service writer. they have a billion things to do at the dealer and i bet this would be the last issue they want to deal with since its so hard to bill. Hopefully you have a good service dept. but be persistent.

Haha I don't know it that's "normal" but unless you post a video or sound clip, your going to get more "helpful" responses like mine

If it is exhaust related, it might be difficult to diagnose since your running an aftermarket exhaust.

I hear a momentary rattle from underneath when my a/c kicks on - only noticable if close to a wall like a fastfood drive thru with my window down.

Have you checked to see if it is loose? Obviously there will be some play, but it's possible some of the flanges may have loosened up a bit to where they rattle now. This happened to me, but near the tail pipe. You may just need need to crank down on some bolts to tighten it up. Also, depending on where it is rattling, you may need to push some of the aluminum heat sheild out of the way a bit. It's pretty thin, and you can move it by hand.

If it s a Magnaflow muffler? I would say it is the baffle on the inside came loose.
