Tightening up steering/handling

Steering has never been "tight" in my opinion on the 4runner but seems about right for lifted with big heavy tires. After fixing the LCA bushing/bolt issues it got rid of the steering wheel shake when hitting bumps and potholes.

That shake is exactly what I have. I'll swap my SPC hardware for OEM soon. It's driving me nuts.

Did you swap them while the front was jacked up? I'm confident I can do it but wonder if the spring would push the arm out of the mounting tabs after removing the old hardware. I'd obviously do one bolt at a time.

How did you do it?

I put the front end up on jack stands on the frame then used a floor jack under the LCA going up little by little to get it to the point where the bolts slid out freely, yes one at a time for sure. I only did either the front or rear bolts this way (I don't remember) I attempted to mark the alignment position and got it close but shortly after replaced the whole control arm and the other bolts and just got a new alignment after.

Other things that have caused that kind of shaking were bad upper ball joints on the SPC UCA's, replaced with new design. And then just having a really bad alignment with not enough caster. It's a shake over bumps like a mild self healing toyota version of a death wobble.

Still have a PDF of the part numbers? I can't seem to find the exploded diagram with all the parts.

Thanks as always!

Part numbers can be found here, I use this place for their microfiche and will buy from them sometimes if it's cheapest but I would search them on fleabay and partsouq to see what's best price shipped. If you want the exploded diagram of torques that's a separate pdf I have on my phone. PM your email address and I can pass it along.

Video/Sound of clunk

Here's a short clip of the clunk I hear, still haven't figured out what it is yet

https://youtu.be/udete-0D10o

What's not noticed in the video is that my driveway is a little steep and so the weight of the vehicle does shift from level to back during this video.

No idea but slip yolk perhaps or something else drive train related in the rear end... Seems like the rear end went down first perhaps causing that thunk?

... just pulling at straws here.

It feels and sounds like it's coming from the front driver side but I can't be for sure knowing sounds can bounce all over. I feel like there is a shutter too when the driver front wheel hits a bump like a pot hole while the other wheels don't. Maybe that's a diff problem though.

Did you ever figure this out? Ive been chasing this gremlin as well. I think I have narrowed it down to the steering column.

Look up the intermediate shaft that is part of your steering.

I am about to overhaul my entire steering set up and I had notice that the u joint that connects right after the rack has a bunch of slop. It is a $50 part on amazon.

Under the steering column before it goes through the firewall there is one more joint with a rubber disk sandwiched between two pieces that held to dampen road vibrations. I would check both of those but my money is on the intermediate shaft.
