Time for a new steering rack?

Well the rack looks to be leaking right where the shaft meets the rack. Is it a safe bet I have to replace the rack? Or is there a seal I can work on? Since I guess replacement is going to be the option what's the best source for a rack? Is this one like the lbj I want to get from the dealer? Or can I get by on generic parts? Aslo I saw someone post using atf in the ps fluid and not to use ps fluid.... what's the story?

PS fluid is AFT fluid.

Do you see oil coming out from the rubber boots? Does it drips badly?

I think you can buy any aftermarket rack, but check with other members too. If I have to buy a rack, I'll find a good used toyota rack. That's how I maintain my toyota. Low miles used toyota parts are still better than any aftermarket or refurbished units.

I've never personally dealt with this company, but I just bookmarked it from a recent discussion.....I think I may be needing a replacement rack myself.

It's not leaking at the boot for the tie rods it's leaking where the steering shaft (totally drawing a blank on the right terms here) that comes from the wheel and goes down to the rack where it meets the rack. It's a pretty clear oily leak. I think it's going to lose fluid at a rate that will keep me topping it up a lot. So A replacment is a must. I don't think there's much in my area for used racks. I didn't check everywhere but the junkyard that does the bulk of the yota stuff hasn't had a 3rd gen in a while I haven't tried up the malahat. I think I'd prefer used. I'll look at that link there.

Make sure it's the rack leaking and not something else leaking onto the rack. If it's the rack the oil should have a pink tint to it and there should be no oil residue higher than the top of the rack.

The front diff can leak from the breather down on top of the rack, and from the drivers side CV axle seal which would spray on the rack and around the area. I believe the rear main seal can also leak down to the area.

The cvs are good that I know off hand. I'll check in when I get a look at it again.
