T4R folks - I've been here, been there, been gone (from the forum), now I've come sneaking back in
I've been in Golf TDI since 2004 (a 2004 and a 2010), I love the Golf, fun to drive, great mileage, looks good, plenty of passenger room, nice ergos, and now paid off.
My wife has had sort of revolving cars, but we got a 2010 4Runner in late '10 as our first family vehicle, we have two kids, traded the 10 for a 14 4Runner because she wanted fancier creature comforts and we both were hesitant to go to a crossover (not for any overly logical reason, but we wanted one of our vehicles to be rugged for living in Alaska and doing outdoorsy stuff). Plus the 4Runner was a better value for money IMO than most of the similarly sized crossovers, especially if you consider resale.
Then we go on vacation and have a minivan rental, now she has seen the light and wants a minivan (I had been promoting this idea for a while). So 9 months after the new 4Runner we have a Sienna. The van is great, no regrets, it's here for the long haul (5-7 years minimum).
So --- now we have a Golf and a Sienna, I don't have a "truck" anymore, nothing rugged, nothing I can adventure in. But I have one fewer car payment than I've had for the past 5 years and my logical side says to enjoy that for at least a few months, right?
But I can't stop looking at 4Runners, I miss having one. I don't want a pick up, I've looked and looked, I can't get excited for one unless it's 55-60K, and that's not happening, I'm comfortable with ~$40K, max 42K. I'm putting a deposit on an inbound trail edition and a TRD Pro (hard to find and all). The trail will be here in a week or two, the Pro in around a month. So it's a refundable right of refusal that will allow me to see them in the flesh.
I've looked at the Grand Cherokee, it's nice, but it's small inside, but very nice and I could get one equipped the way I would want for less, around 37-39K (Limited, V6, 4x4), but I think I would be disappointed by the lack of cubic storage in the back, and the bullet proof reliability isn't there (though it's not bad).
I've looked at every dealer in town and I don't think there's another competitor (not interested in the ancient interior of the Xterra) I'm missing.
TLDR - do you have a good reason NOT to buy a 4Runner?
