Time to change some tires

I was very happy to find this forum. I just bought a 2004 T4R SR5 . It has the factory installed Dunlops (17") and they will probably make it through the summer but I will need new rubber for the winter. I live in Calgary, AB, Canada and my hobbies are all mountain related. Cross country and downhill skiing, snow shoeing, mountain biking and scrambling. The roads in the mountains can get ugly because of the amount of snow and unpredictable weather conditions.

I was just wondering what other tires people have had success with in similar conditions? I did have a set of BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's on a Pathfinder I owned a long time ago and they faired well. I'm not sure if they suit the T4R.

The price of fuel is climbing and I am concerned with fuel economy as well. I am after long wearing tires with decent traction year round and a quiet ride.

Rugged Trails aren't the answer. I'd go with the Michelins if you really don't off road. Nitto TGs are much better in the wet and snow than the BFGs and I know from personal experiences.

The BFG All Terrains are my first choice followed by the Bridgestone Revos. Michelin LTX-MS perform well as well. Only problem with the BFG's and the Michelin's are you will need to go to a 265/70R-17.

Those are two good tire choices, if you need strength and moderate off road capabilities then go with the BFG A/T's...

From the first part of your post about the bad snowy roads, I would go with the BFG's. The Michelins are more of a street tire that will work in the snow, but the BFGs will work much better.

Though like said, you may loose some MPG...but my guess is it would be minimal.
 
A friend of mine lives up near Jay Peak VT, so he sees over 300" of snow a year and swears by the Bridgestone Dueler AT, not the revo. He switched over to Toyo open countries and said the Bridegestones are much better in snow. I use the Toyos here in MA and love them, but they aren't the best in snow, but I am not in the snow belt so its fine.

We have a set of Bridgestone Revos AT's and a set of regular Bridgestone AT's on both our vehicles . I do prefer the regular ones over the Revos.

I would look into the following if I was buying a new set of tires.....
BFG AT
Nitto TG's
Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor AT
Bridestone AT's Reg. or Revo depending on your needs.

Also I talked to a guy last night at the farm store and he had Firestone Destination At that looked nice , he likes them , I know nothing about them but they looked like a nice tread .
 
Falls I have tried the Firestone Destination A/T tires and I felt they were better than the revos..... in the snow that is.

The Bridgestone dueler APT'3 sold at Sears is a good tire in the snow it's sort of like a Bridg...A/T tire but the tread is just a little different.

I was told that a great tire (esp in snow) and one I may try some day is the Nokian ..... (I think it's called the WR) or something like that.

A/T tires that work real good in the snow are sort of a hit or miss sort of thing. I have had some no name tires before that were great in the snow but were not real good at other things like low noise, bad ride, wear out to quick etc etc.

Watch out for some A/T tires many of them have a shallow tread depth like 11/32nd of tread depth and some in the same size tire will have a nice deep tread like 17/32nd of depth.

I have all summer to decide what to choose for the winter. (Actually with all the snow we have had lately it still looks like winter here!! I will continue to review the info I find on the forum and make my decision at some point. I can then post some feedback on my findings.
 
I probably sound like a broken record on this forum but check out the Cooper Discoverer STs. i never hear anyone mention coopers around here! I have the STs on my 3rd Gen and they are absolutely amazing. They look awesome, arent' very loud, are AMAZING in snow (I'm from Manitoba), and i just tested them out 2 days ago in the mud/sand/dirt and i was blown away. My brother in his Xterra couldn't keep up with me...he had some goodyear wrangers on his.

Cooper web site is informative. the ATR is acutally better rated per them on the wet and snow than the Discovery. just a thought....you ride in em so you know em better.....eh? =)
 
Hi, I just started researching tires for my 04 and, using 1010tires.com, quickly down selected to the following 3 choices that come in 265/65-R17s (for my limited).

Revo's, Cross Terrains, and a new tire called a Yokohama Geolander A/T. The ratings for the Revos and the Geolander are extremly close with the Cross Terrains coming in 3rd.

The cross terrains and the revos have the same speed rating and capacity. The Geolander has a higher speed rating (not that I'll be driving over 112 mph) and a higher capacity (130 lbs more than revo @ 2469 lbs) which I find attractive.

I'm Michelin biased from past experience (pre 4runner days), but I'm either going with revos or the Geolander - I'm in the same boat - new tires before Winter.

I think the Yokohama's are relatively new.

They can be compared at 1010tires.com

Thanks. I myself like the look of the Revos. People swear by em....they are priced about the same as the Michelin CT here in Sac.
 
Keep an eye on the tread depth on some of today's tires there are many tires out there with little tread deph compared to some other brand in the same size.
 
Are the Bridgestone Revos still the tire of choice for guys like me who drive 99% of the time on the highway & in the city?

I'm reading some very good things about the Michelin Cross Terrains as well that has me thinking they're the one to get over the Revos.

My only two requirements for my 4Runner tires are 1) quiet! and 2) good MPG. I will rarely off-road and when I do it'll be light, so not much worry there.

Revos seem to be popular but from what I've read the Michelin CT is probably the better tire for you... better rollng resistance and quieter.

Other's worth checking... Good Year Fortera, Pirelli Scorpion ATR, Firestone Destination AT.

Sadly it's tough to find out what sort of rolling resistance tires have other than from people's direct experiences. Generally I'd expect any AT tire to have greater resistance and therefore worse fuel economy.
