Time to Change the Tires!!

Alright, so after 33k, my mud terrains are not what they used to be, and they are getting louder every single day! after this most recent tellico trip I realized that they were past there prime and i have been wanting to go to something less "luggy" to improve gas mileage a little bit, and to just feel nicer on the road, but im not sure yet, I have quite a few tires on my list that I am interested in, but need some differing opinions than my own.

so on with the choices

1. BFG Mud Terrain - great all around tire, looks good, rides good, performs very well in most terrain.

2. Super Swamper S.S. - this tire is pretty much not really in the running as its a real rough tire, the only reason i would get it would be to fit a 34" on my truck, the size would be 34" x 9.5"

3. Bridgestone Revo's - have seen alot of you get these as opposed to the BFG All Terrain, I like the tread and the fact that it is a more street worthy tire that does better in the rain than the AT.

4. Nitto - Terragrapplers/Mud Grapplers - just a neat looking tire that looks like it might fit my needs, and its something different that not a whole lot of people have.

alright, now on with the needs that the next set will need to meet, high speed interstate driving (80), daily commute to and from school (45 max speed), urban offroading (curbs and parking bump stops) and of course, mild- difficult offroading, including mostly mud, with some sugar sand and lots of water, so, let me know what you all think

BFG Mud Terrains, or for something less aggressive, BFG All-Terrains. Both look awesome and work great.

Everyone raves about the REVO and I don't doubt they're a great tire, but the BFG's look 1000X's better.

alright, well it looks like the revo's are in the lead, who voted for the nitto's? why do you like them more than the revo's? its getting pretty close to the time to change out these tires

I get the impression from other owners the Wrangler MT/R is overall better than the BFG MT.

i see plenty of mud, after all, i do live in florida. i have had a handful of friends get the goodyear and they werent as happy with them as I was, they seemed to think they didnt wear evenly, i have heard arguments for both sides on yotatech, and after much research there, i have concluded that they are the same exact tire with different manufacturers. i drive on the road more than i offroad (sad but true) but i still want some bite offroad... this looks like its going to be a really hard decision, why cant i just have rims or something to make this easier!!

I agree totally !!! I've had both and the Revo is a great street wet weather tire. Not good as an all terrain IMO. I have 20k on my Revos , the last few snows we had they handled like crap. Hopefully in summer or fall I will pull them and go back to BFG AT/KO. Another option is to check out the Nitto TG , never had them but never heard anyone complain about them.

Why would you want such an aggressive tire like the pics you posted ? Are you in mud that often ?

I would go with the Nitto's or maybe their bigger brother, Toyo Open Country's.

If you already have BFG MT, then i would NOT recommend Goodyear Wrangler MT/R. The MT/Rs are great when you first get them. However, they wear horribly, makes a lot of noise down the road, and balance poorly. They are extremely tough and great on rocks, but do poorly in mud. (If you're into rock crawling, then i would recommend them.)

If you want A/T, then i highly recommend BFG AT KO...but remember, NONE of the AT's do well in mud (by design).

May as well throw your money away. Continentals are crap. The casings don't hold up (they blow the sidewalls where they meet the tread; it's a design thing.)

Let us know how they work out. We had the Contin. Contrac SUV's on out Escape 4x4 and they were terrible riding. We took them off and went with Bridgestone AT's , the Revos were not available in the size we needed.

These are different than the ones you are getting so curious to see what you think.

If you like mud and don't like to get stuck, go with the BFG Mud T/A's. They do get noisy with mileage as you know.

I finally decided to get Nitto Terra Grapplers since I have no lift and BFG Mud T/A's aren't made in a size that will work. The big decision was between BFG AT's and the Nitto's I decided on the Nitto's to try something different and the tread looks like it will do a little better in the mud. Cost also entered into it, $673 driveout vs. $900 something for the BFG's. Had to order the Nitto's however, so now I get to wait for 1.5 weeks. Discount Tire said the Nitto's are on national back order and tried to talk me into a 10-ply version , but 4Wheel Parts has 20 something in their California warehouse, now less 4

I have BFG AT's and recently we have had a bit of rain, so I decided to test my BFG's in the mud. I went up this trail with an incline with a slight slope down to the drivers side, and a big rut on the far left. As I am driving up this muddy trail, I notice I am starting to slide down to the rut, so as I am going up this hill I am trying not to slide into this rut that I may or may not be able to get out of. I am cranking the wheel to the right, and giving the car gas. Keep in mind that this is not a heavy slope at all just very slick with mud. I eventually gave up and backed down the hill to a level part, where I parked and got out to look at the tires. They were giant mud balls. There was no lugs visible, the entire tire was covered in mud.
In my opinion BFG AT's either do not shed mud well, or are just plain bad in the mud. Also remeber the BFG AT KO's are a very old design, at least ten years from what I understand. I am not dissapointed by my choice to go with BFG AT's because they are a great looking tire that perform great for me in the sand at the desert and do well in the rain for me, so I am happy with them. Perhaps when I have to replace them I would go with the nitto's AT or the TOYO'S AT. Or perhaps something else that ranks high at tirerack.com.
