So far, the Conti's are fine, but we haven't asked much of them yet. They're quiet, which is very important to me. We'll be taking the truck on a 2000+ mile trip in March, and I'll report back after we return.

Well said Thai , Greasy mud = mud tire and even at that check out Thai's other post with mud bog pics. Even the mud tire can have problems.... right Thai ....lol
 
Thanks MAC! I ask because my Land Rover came stock with Michelin Synchrones that went 50,000 miles. When it came to change them out, I didn't want to pay the $250 a tire, and so I went with Pirelli Scorpions at $130 a tire. Allthough the Pirellis came with a 60,000 mile warranty, they lasted only 15,500 miles before hitting the tread marks - evenly all four tires. None of their dealers in the area want to help me with the warranty.

Needless to say, I have learned my lesson and am planning to purchase Michelins for my 4Runner.

I have them stock on my 4R. They work great in snow and my friend was amazed at how stable and comfortable it rode during a snow shower. Chain controls were in effect. The 4R felt as stable as it is in dry weather and often I found myself driving faster than I should because of the stability, only felt I was going too fast when I look down at the speedometer at 50+.

If you already have BFG MT, then i would NOT recommend Goodyear Wrangler MT/R. The MT/Rs are great when you first get them. However, they wear horribly, makes a lot of noise down the road, and balance poorly. They are extremely tough and great on rocks, but do poorly in mud. (If you're into rock crawling, then i would recommend them.)

If you want A/T, then i highly recommend BFG AT KO...but remember, NONE of the AT's do well in mud (by design).

I've had personal experience with the Wranglers not balancing well. I would not recommend these.
 
right now im in the market for some new tires because i drive in the snow ALOT and i also drive i weird areas as well as curb hoppig and actual offroading because im an EMT. so basically my needs fall all into the category of Nitto Terra-Grapplers because im also a college student and funds are an issue
 
I've had the Nitto's for a couiple weeks now. I've made two trips to and from Houston to Austin, plus daily driving to and from work. I'm happy with the handling and I really thought they would be louder. With all of that highway driving I haven't had a chance to go off road yet. Now looks like I'm driving to Tennessee next week. Based on the 4R's computer, milage hasn't changed too much from the cross terrains. No doubt I'll have more off-road confidence than the stock cross terrains.
 
My tire guy just told me of a good tire from Good Year. I believe it's the Wrangler AT/S. He said they are quiet, long lasting and hold the road well. The ratings at Good Year show between 7 and 9 out of 10. Check it out.

Don't overlook the Firestone

I'll throw some support to Keylay 31 recommendation about the Firestone Discovery series. I can't speak for the M/T but I did have a set of the Discovery A/T, a bit more roadable tire, and was very happy with them in wet and snow as well. Not sure about mud, it was on a 2WD Dodge Ram, so I didn't get that adventurous with them other than taking loads of demolition trash to the dump.

Also, pretty easy on the wallet too.
 
i have put nearly 6k on my cooper stt's and they perform great! ;-)
i rotate, balance and align (if needed) every oil change (4k mi)
 
I actually started a thread because I am in the same situation as you. I have finally decided on Michelins for sure, but it is a tough call between the LTX, the AT/2's, and the Cross Terrains. All about the same price I believe. never knew it would be so stressful shopping for just TIRES!
