Time to upgrade my front shocks to 2.5" coilovers. External Resi's or no resi?

So Im considering Kings or Icons and ready to place my order. Unfortunately King does not offer a coilover setup with external reservoirs for 3rd gens. My question is do you guys truly feel they are needed for our trucks. Being that they are much lighter than the 4th gens, FJ Cruisers etc. i enjoy going fast on washboards, whoops etc. So I feel as though they would be a smart purchase for my uses. Not to mention its only a few hundred more to have them. I also hate the braking dive on my 5100 setup.

One more question. I plan to add a plate bumper and winch in a few months. Would it be ok to order my coils with 700lb springs with out the extra front weight? Would 700lb springs help with higher speed desert runs? Or will 650lb springs be a good compromise?

Out of the two options I’d say go with Kings for the reasons we discussed in your last thread about coilovers. Another option to look into is ADS Racing Shocks. I’ve heard a lot of good things about their products and service. [MENTION=75445]4Running Daily[/MENTION] seems to really like his and swears by them. They offer 2.5” with remote resi. So you have the option of Progressive valving for your style of driving plus the 2.5” with remote resi’s that you are looking into. Also you can always call king and custom order a set with the resi’s. For this you can talk to [MENTION=57546]4-Ripcord[/MENTION] at King Shocks

I feel there is no need for a front resi. I have had both the Icon and King 2.5 coilovers and they are very similar in performance. When I had the icons, I rubbed on the resi all the time (keep in mind I have 35s though, and it was mounted using the supplied brackets).

So my preference is the kings due to the fact that there is no resi to rub on.

on spring rate, 650 is the max I would go. 700 will ride horribly regardless of what bumper setup you have.

I paid just under $1,500 shipped for 2.5 ADS coilovers with Resi's and love them. You don't need resi's until you do. Then you really need them haha. Sure with 35's I rub the resi a little but not enough to hurt them or the tire. I'd rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

Second, I really wish I had experience with good coilovers so I could give input on that. I'm positive King wants to sponsor me a set [emoji23]

Curb weight of:
3rd gen- 3,930
4th gen- 4,280
FJC- 4,290
So, the difference might not be as much as one would think. What's really surprising- to me- is that the FJC is 10lbs heavier than a 4th gen 4R with 4 doors and more glass?! That sweet cream roof must be made of 1/4" steel for when they roll over.
Interested to hear what you go with, and how you like them.

King definitely has done and will do these coilovers with resi's, filthy probably just hasnt sold any of them. It would fall under a custom order though ($$$), and at that point I would just go with something else.

Go resi and 600lb coil. If/when you add a bumper/winch, I think 650s would be fine. I ran 700s for a minute and it was brutal.

I have not setup my 3rd gen with coil overs yet - but in the last year I have helped install Icons in a handful of Toyotas. They have all had failures within the first year after install. One set of Icons w/ external resis did not even make it onto the Tacoma before it was bleeding everywhere. For the money I will not go Icon when it comes time for me to upgrade next. Just my 2 cents.

Are you able to achieve a 3" lift with your kings? They told me that 2.5" was also the max lift I can get? or it that just a recommendation based on their ride quality recommendations?

if you set it above 2.5 you will top out the shocks on the backside of every bump you hit

love my kings. but like 4-Ripcord says 700 is a bit much for our trucks. im planning to go down to a 650 or even a 600 lb depending on the next rebuild on these. and the resi's not needed but are nice to have as well as adjusters.
