I have a 96 4WD with the 3.4. I am at 63k since last belt change. How difficult is the job? Is there a webpage that runs through the procedure? Will I need to buy any tools, like a cam holder?

Just got back from the dealer 10 mins ago. Had the belts and water pump done.
Labor = $530.30 (inc. state insp +emmissions)
Parts = Timing belt - $56.99
Alternator v belt - $12.53
V ribbed belt - $10.81
V belt - $27.13
Water pump - $136.76
Antifreeze - $28.05
Tax = $55.65
Discount - -$13.00
TOTAL = $850.62

I would agree with the mileage statement, and as far as the tensioner compressor, u can just use a vice to slowly compress it, then insert an allen wrench through the holes to hold it in place. Don't think you will need a cam gear holder. Done a couple of belts without them.

i think there was more partsi replaced but i dont remember them all these are the more main parts.
i was about the same in parts as well all toyota i replaced all the moving parts that are related to the t belt.rubbman said:

What is 'book time'?
According to my receipt they charged me 5.5 hours labor for just the belt replacements.
... and to make matters worse, my engine now sounds like a weed wacker and an electric lawn mower having a fight. There is a horrible, really loud whirring sound coming from belt area.

as for what to change, if you're around 100k miles it's good to do the seals, and t-stat while you're in there. if you want to go further, grab a tensioner and an idler pulley too, as the idlers are known to pop after time.
as always you should do the water pump and drive belts. and pleaseeee use genuine toyota coolant.

I'm really pissed with the Toyota tech for letting it leave the shop like that since when I took it back (2 hours after picking it up) he agreed that something was not right. It's going back in on Monday to be remedied.

I would bet $100 that the noise is coming from the cam sensor wire hitting the cam pulley. No way should the belt make any noise after replacement. It doesnt need to 'broken in'. No such thing. I'm not gonna start the debate again, but I think its rediculous to replace every damn thing behind the timing cover. I hate the red toyota coolant. To me it seems a bit more corrosive to gaskets and seals. As far as book time, it's an industry standard of time that is what shops use to figure labor times and prices. There are labor guides that shows labor time for any particular job. If you got charged 5+ hours just for the belt replacement, you got way overcharged unless their labor rate is almost half of what everyone charges. Most shops out here charge about $85-$125 per hour
