Had the timing belt done along with water pump and such. Picked it up today and all the way home it was at -198-200degrees according to scan gauge. Before belt change and stuff ran pretty consistent at 184-186degrees. I have old thermostat and it's marked 82celsius on it as well as new one was the same. Any thoughts? Would jiggle valve in wrong spot matter? Thanks

Yeah the jiggle valve Needs t/b down to 6 oclock. Up gives ya about 10-15 degrees higher, go figure.
When i did my radiator replacement, I did the thermostat too. In my case the old thermostat showed scarring towards the top which I think was hindering it from opening completely. I say this because I used to be at the temps yours is at now and dropped right away to your old temps, Nice. :cowboy:

I dont really think that the position on the jiggle valve matters all that much from what Ive read in other threads. When I did my timing belt and water pump last year the old thermostat had the jiggle valve at 12. I put the new one in the same position and have never seen the temps go above 195 and that was when it 85 outside pulling a 6% grade for 4+ miles. I would test to see what the boil over and freeze temp is at. I think the ratio of water to coolant will affect the temp more than the jiggle valve position

I saw a 10+ degree difference on my torque app between 12'o clock and 6'o clock jiggle valve when I did my thermostat in August. I was seeing 192-205 going up hills on the highway and after I redid it to put it at 6'o clock, temps went back down to 180-185 going up the same hills a day later. These were in 100+ degree temps too.
Well it sounds like the jiggle is up instead of down then to me. 14-16 degree difference. Is it worth swapping around? I'm in Arizona but truck will be getting shipped overseas within a month to Europe for a couple years while I am there working and it will definitely be cooler where I'm going. Thanks

Like others have said, the jiggle position definitely matters with our rigs. Jiggle valve pointing downward in the 6 o'clock position is correct. What I find interesting is the difference in coolant temps with the same rigs. I have a new radiator, new thermostat, new fan clutch and my temps average 190-194. I do have a trans cooler on the front of my AC condenser so maybe that affects a little air flow through the radiator. I've never seen low 180's. But, maybe there is a difference between Scan Gauge values and Torque Pro values. I'm using Torque Pro.

It is definitely worth swapping around. If you don't want to bother with taking it back to the shop that did the job, drain the coolant into a clean bucket, remove the lower radiator hose, remove the neck that houses the thermostat and turn the thermostat into the correct position. It's pretty easy to do.

No, just tedious. Have to drain the coolant, then undo 3 nuts that hold on the thermostat housing (follow lower radiator hose). Drain the coolant into something clean, so you can reuse it. If the jiggle vale is at 12 o'clock, place at 6 o'clock, make sure the thermostat is OEM. There is a huge difference between an OEM and aftermarket thermostat. Replace thermostat housing, and tighten 3 nuts. Fill with coolant. I put in a new t-stat when I replaced my timing belt/water pump. Original one someone else put in was at 12 o'clock. Placed the new OEM t-stat at 6 o'clock, now runs around 191 degrees instead of 200.

It's very easy. I think the longest step will be waiting for the coolant to drain out of the radiator. The lower radiator hose comes off easy. There's three nuts that hold that neck on and they are easy to get to.
You're not actually turning the thermostat around but just rotating the jiggle valve to a different position. I'm guessing the shop put the jiggle valve at the 12 0'clock position. Watch the video I provided and it will make sense.

When I replaced my t-belt and water pump I put it at 12 o'clock because that's the way it was before, and it ran great. I get temps between 197 - 202 depending on cool highway driving or hot stop-go traffic.
The jiggle valve at 6 o'clock will definitely drop it ~10 degrees.
That being said, ~200 +- 7 or so degrees is totally safe and normal. If I lived in Alaska or Northern Canada, I'd probably want it at 12 o'clock. But since a cooler engine means better efficiency, and thus more horsepower and gas mileage, the lower temps are desired for just about everywhere else.
But I'm too lazy to dig into it and flip it around.
I'll probably do it this spring when things start heating back up again.

Giggle valve mattered on mine,dealer did belt change and my scan gauge read a hotter temp,than they acted like I was stupid,they did swap it after demanding and it went back 15-20 degrees cooler.
