Timing Belt Change

Greetings,

I am the proud owner of 2004 V8 4Runner Sport with 58,000 miles. My owners manual says that I should replace the timing belt at 60,000 but the manufacturer of the belt lists the replacement time at 90,000 miles.

Is Toyota trying to make an extra couple of bucks, or should I do it at 60,000?

Could it be that you are confusing the timing belt with the accessory drive belt?

The timing belt is hidden under the timing cover and should be replaced at 90K.

The accessory drive belt is easily visible when opening the hood and should be replaced as needed on visual inspection.

The new yota motors are non-interference motors. Just wait till it breaks and then put the new one on. Yeah you get stranded on the side of the road, but at least the motor is safe.

I am not so sure. I have always thought the 4.7 V8 is a interference engine. If you check this guide for timing belts, it has a * next to the 4.7 V8 on the 4Runner, meaning it is a interference engine.

Edit. They now have another section lower down on the same page saying do you have a interference engine. I look up a 2007 4Runner V8 and it said:

Well, the 4.0 has a chain, so Gates belts won't have any info on that. My guess is, and it is only a guess, with a chain and variable timing it might very well be a interference engine also.

I have also thought the same, as it being kinda high comp and vvt, I just asked a tech at the dealer and he said it was non-interference. Never opened up the motor yet.
 
I have a 04' SR-5, V-6, 2WD, and the color of mine is "TITANIUM WHITE". I wont drive nothin but WHITE TOY OH TAH! Of the 60 some vehicles I've owned (not counting a VESPA & a HARLEY), this T4R is absolutely the best built of any! I recently replaced the orig. PANASONIC battery (from dealer) and 5 orig. tires (Discount Tires). I bought this rig "new" in Sept. of 03' and it has 26K miles on it. As a retired industrial equipment salesman for 25 years, who retired 25 years ago, "TRAVEL" is not on my retirement agenda. Ah did some travel for 3 years in the Marines also. Ah "been there/dont that" till ah puked.
 
The thread posts are very confusing..

First, if you have a 2004 V8 YES it is an interference engine and will damage the engine if the belt breaks.

Second, the manual says 90K miles or every 72 months, 6 years. Whichever comes first. So YES you are due even though you have only 58k miles..

Third, to each their own. If it breaks your screwed. To replace it will give you piece of mind.

Fourth, FWIW. I replaced mine at 55K miles but it was at the 72 month mark.

this is completely incorrect. The 4.7L V8 is in fact the only interference motor toyota produces.

thank you lineman for providing the correct information glad somebody knows what they're talking about.

I replaced mine at 70,000 as it had exceeded 7 years. then again at 139,000 just to keep the 70,000 mile interval lol.
 
replacing timing belt

For those wondering if they should replace their timing belt earlier than the 90,000 mi recommendation , If you start to notice a backfire when starting, replacing it would be a good idea. It's a sign your valve timing may be off slightly which may be attributed to a stretched or worn belt.

You should assume that any engine that has variable timing (i.e. VVTI, VTEC,etc). is a interference engine. Just to be on safe side.

I am having my 2005 done this Saturday. (200K)
They wanted to charge me $145 to replace the thermostat as well. (This was an automated system). I didn't accept that of course.

Correct me if I am wrong, but they have to take out the thermostat and housing to get to the timing belt correct? I have already bought a new one and seal.
I am just going to tell them to use my parts (thermostat) when they put it back together.
 
It is possible to remove the thermostat housing and keep the thermostat untouched. So you could totally do this yourself after you get it back from the shop.

The only reason its easier to have them do it is because you'll have to partially drain the coolant to pull the thermostat housing apart (so you can remove the "lower" radiator hose). Just have a clean container and drain out the bottom of the radiator, but I'm sure you'll still loose coolant when you get access to the thermostat. If you top off the fluid when you're done, make sure to use the same type of coolant that you lost, i.e. red vs SLL pink.

Thanks for the info. I used My Mechanic for the job. $716. He came to my house, and agreed with me about the Tstat. He used my parts, and said he the kit should have one too. Mine was OEM so he used that.

Guy pulled up in a Tundra, and he really knows Toyota. So it was a good deal and he did a good job.
I showed him the Slyfox air pump bypass, he was very interested in it.

Hey all two things. Is Aisin a good reputable brand for the belt? Also - this didn't mention a water pump. I've done a million Honda timing belts and always do the water pump with it. Thanks.
