timing belt failure

Thanks for the quick reply. I planned on pulling the valve cover tomorrow but that’s about as far as I’ll take it. I won’t touch camshafts or bearings, a little past my knowledge and confidence.

Any ideas on what could be broken or what to look for specifically once I pull the cover?

That’s what has me baffled. These are non interference so how would the head get damaged.

Not sure, all fluids were at levels and normal looking upon tear down.

That's the thing. I never heard of a 5vz head seizing. Could be just about anything if it broke. Whatever it is it was an instant stop. According to your timing belt damage. :(

I don't remember exactly how many miles my 97 had when I bought it, but I think it was around 135K and the original owner had changed it twice. I recently hit 300K and have done nothing. Still runs great, but the body is rusting badly, gaping holes in rear bumper and running boards are about gone. Trying to decide if it will live long enough to make the timing belt job worthwhile...

I do have pretty bad valve cover oil leaks too

rear bumper is easy to replace, don't forget to buy new brackets as your old ones are shot. Running board, get rid of them. If it's only that, hell yeah it's worth it. Why not do some anti-rust underneath that truck?

So my guess is yes it's worthwhile. There is a way to remove the tensioner's bolt without removing the A/C bracket with 1/4 drive boxes and extensions if you do it yourself.

Valve cover gasket is more involved than the timing belt job, but good time to do it at the same time if you have the time. Don't forget new rubber washers under the valve cover bolts

Ahh, we called them running boards when I was a kid and my terminology hasn't grown up. I actually took the running boards off as soon as I bought it because they are so ugly, so its the rocker panels that are half rusted and gone.

Not too concerned with the bumper for now, because this vehicle was rolled twice so cosmetics aren't high on the list. It was perfect when I rolled it but my comp/collision insurance had lapsed so...no fixie

I just patch them up and run them. In my area almost all 3 rd gets are gone due to the PA chrome known as rust rot.

Any ideas on why a single camshaft would lock up and not the other or crankshaft?

Not really a mechanic but inclined enough to follow instructions/videos to do the work.
Foamed oil, lost lubrications and galled up the camshaft?

Looks like the timing belt broke because the engine seized, not the other way around.

Gotta pull off that valve cover for a visual inspection. All just speculation until them. Though if you've rolled the vehicle twice, who knows what might have happened internally. If a new head or engine is in order it sounds like the vehicle should be scrapped instead and money spent elsewhere.

I rolled it in 2010, over 100K ago. It started right up and drove just fine after the accident, for 12.5 years and counting. It had Thule racks on top so even the moonroof works, though tilting it is risky and I won't do it. Plus it rolled in about a foot of snow, so its just crumpled here and there. I got "lucky" if you can call crumpling your mint looking 4runner "lucky". Mostly lucky I had my seat belt on, or I might not be here to still enjoy it.It was a hell of a ride, one I hope never to repeat.

Wow, you did get lucky! Or someone was watching out for you and has a bigger plan for your life. I'm very glad that both you and your rig is relatively unhurt. That adds a lot of context too as if there was flooding or leaks it would have turned up a long, long time ago so I agree with you that the rollover would not have to do with the current issue. It does however make it even more puzzling. I've seen pistons crack, rods break and heads crack on these engines. I have never seen one seize up like this. Not once.
