Im thinking i bent some valves .I rechecked the timing marks and everything lines up .I remember rolling the engine over a few times when i thought i had it in time and it was a few teeth off and it might have been damged then .I am going to take it to a shop monday or tuesday .So much for saving monay and doing my own timing belt .

Well i took it to the repair shop today .The guy said it is pretty likely i didnt bend the valves .He said i would have felt a pretty big resistance when i rolled it over and i would have had to really cranked on the crank to go it to go past when i was turning it over to see if it was in time .He said it might be a lifter stuck .I am going to have them adjust the valves when they are in there as well . I will know wednesday what the real problem is .

Well i got my runner back from the repair shop today .It was two vacum hoses i replaced that got too close to the header and cracked that was making the noise .I found them when removing the plugs .I didnt think it made that big of a difference where they went because they were so close to each other .Wrong!.Well at any rate it only cost me 160.00 dollars to replace my timing belt and i did most of the labor myself LOL!!One thing i would have had to take it in to get the crank pully torqued to spec anyhow so i guess i have done my first and last timing belt .

Hey great work! I was thinking of doing my own, but I wouldn't want to stuff it up. Was it hard to do? AFAIK you have to remove the radiator, remove the belts and big fat pulley/harmonic balancer, remove timing belt cover, loosen tensioner and then remove belt. Then do the reverse and maybe even replace the water pump before refitting it all. Have I missed anything? How long did it take you all up? And would you say you are fairly mechanically competent, or is this pretty new to you?

I am very mechanical but i would not suggest this at all .I can do any kind of work on my vehicle but the inside of transmissions and engines are off limits for me now .It took me over 10 hours because i didnt want to mess things up so i took my time and yes you have to take all those things off .You need a pulley holder and a tourqe wrench to get the balancer/crank pulley to 210fpt .It was very nerve racking to get the belt on right with all the marks lined up .I put it on the way the manual said and every time i would release the tensioner it would go 5 degrees or more out of time. I had to come up with a way to put 5 or so out of time the other directionso when i released the tensioner it would be in time .I would not attempt this unlless you have the right tools, alot of time and something else to drive in the meantime if you mess it up .I would have rather paid somebody 350-400 dollars to to it for me .

You can't bend the valves on the 3.0 by being out of time. That is a non-interference engine. If you can get the pistons to touch the valves, you have really big problems.
