timing belt replacement costs?

Scheduled my job at local shop for later this week. Guy asking $750 for job.

I would DIY but am nervous about getting TDC correct and I hear that one bolt is a real PITA.

Advice?

TDC is easy. Line up the dots before you take the old belt off and that's it.

I bought my 4runner with a blown engine and swapped out the engine myself, having never worked on a Toyota before. Swapped the timing belt out on the new engine and it took more time to read the procedure than it actually took.

I built a fixture to hold the bottom pulley while the bolt was removed/installed out of a 3/16" piece of flat stock steel welded to a piece of small diameter tubing.
 
Does the price include OEM parts? If so, the actual labor portion of the $750 is really about $400, give or take.

If the parts are not even OEM, then I'd say it's not worth it.

^^^^ above assumes the $750 isn't just TB. I hope you mean TB, WP, idler(s), seals, etc?
 
$750 was for turn-key job. Parts and labor. Water pump included. Not sure about OEM. But will insist.

Read through the DIY. Have done more difficult jobs. But have gotten to where I hate gashing up my hands.

Worked on my daughter's Stella scooter over the weekend and still have cuts everywhere.

I was quoted $400 from a dealer. Parts and labor. Not sure it included water pump, so add that as you wish.
 
Balancer Bolt?

Job didn't get finished yesterday. Went by after they closed and saw a sign on vehicle that said "Balancer Bolt". I assume this is for the harmonic balancer.

Did they really have to remove this bolt?

Anything to look for when I pick up the ride to make sure they did the job correctly?

You guys have really cheap dealership labor costs! When I called to inquire about it, the local dealers wanted between $900-1100, plus $300 extra for the water-pump and thermostat (all parts and labor)...

I did the swap myself in the garage while it was 114 degrees outside (literally!). With breaks for water and cooling down, a buddy and I had it done in about 9 hours altogether. We did all the components (idler + tensioner), water pump, thermostat, timing belt, and spark plugs. Cost was around $300 and I got all the parts at AutoZone. I worked there for 10 years through high-school and college and have never seen an issue with the Dayco products.

With 120k miles, the OEM timing belt looked a million times better than the OEM drivebelt. The water pump had a small weep and was a little tight, but still working fine. I don't know if I'll run the Dayco for that long (I bought the truck used with 90k and didn't realize it wasn't done or that it even had a belt... I drive Nissan's which mostly have chains), but a 400 mile drive from 1500' ASL to 8800' ASL without a single hiccup leads me to think she'll be just fine!

Yes they did. That's the one bolt you mentioned in the first post of this thread you heard is a PITA.

Thanks for the clarification on the bolt.

Truck was running great when I dropped it off. Guess the only indication of a job well done will be it running exactly the same.
 
I have been getting a lot of quotes on this job for mine. At first I was going to buy one of the kits listed, but none of the shops will warranty it if they don't supply the parts. Even with that, some of the labor estimates were $600.

I finally found a shop I felt good about and they quoted me $675 for OEM parts and labor for the timing belt and water pump.
 
You guys have some insanely cheap dealerships! My local dealership wanted 1400 for the T belt and another 400 to do the water pump, Im a mechanic and know how to do the repair, but with a broken neck its a bit hard to get up at the moment... A friends shop is going to do it all for 1350, and a trans flush and smog for me. Using real parts. The parts are running 900 alone.
 
Jesus, I had mine done as well as the water pump and fan belt for like $250 with parts...pays to know a mechanic personally I guess. I would never even consider going to Toyota. Its straight up robbery. They tried to charge me $50 for a plastic gas cap. The parts guy was ashamed to even tell me the price. I swear Toyota would make more money by charging reasonable prices, then everyone would take their vehicles there. Everyone I know makes a specific effort to avoid going to Toyota.
