Timing Belt?

Good morning, any help will be very appreciated.

I go to start my 4runner this morning and all it does is crank but wont start.
is it fuel pump?
is it spark?
or could it be timing belt? the reason I ask is I'm not sure if I should be seeing some RPM register on the tac while cranking.(there is no RPM)

Thanks
Rick

I just looked at the timing belt. it is intact.
I can smell gas fumes from the exhaust, so I'm guessing it's not the fuel pump.
Must be electrical.
any ideas where to start?

Look for the 3 basics. Fuel, Compression, and Spark.

Can you hear the fuel pump click on and run for a couple seconds when you turn the key to on? It does this to pressurize the system. If you can't hear it take off the gas cap. It should go whooshh (releasing pressure).

If your intake system is clear you should be getting air. You said the timing belt is intact so you should be getting compression.

I always start with the spark plugs for electrical. It's probably flooded now. Get some new spark plugs. Then try starting the engine with your gas foot on the floor.

Keep us posted....

I have spark.
I don't here the fuel pump run. I'm guessing pump at this point.
Any easy way to get to it?
Do I have to drop the tank?

Is there a place to hook up a pressure gauge to check fuel pressure?

Did you pull off the gas cap? Take the gas cap off. Did it release pressure? Before you jump to the fuel pump you might want to look at the electrical of the pump. Fuses, etc.

And yes the fuel pump is in the gas tank and requires dropping the tank.

You might have to do a little research on testing with a fuel pressure gauge as I have yet to find a good point to test it at. Maybe someone will chime in...

Yes I removed the cap and found no pressure.
I do not here it run when I engage the ignition.
I tested the EFI relay and it appears to be good.

Is there any other simple test I can do prior to dropping the tank?

Oh and thanks by the way. I appreciate your help.

You could check power to the pump first. This would tell you whether it's time to drop the tank or not.

When was the last time the filter was changed?

Although that wouldn't explain the lack of pressure..

Edit-- Check the power TO the fuel pump...

I had somebody suggest that I unplug the MAF and try it.
BINGO!:guitar3:
Gotta love it.
Another expensive part but at least I found the problem.

I ended up pulling it out and cleaning it.
I plugged it back in and tested it per my Chilton manual and it seems to be working. for how long is the question. we'll see.

Thanks again everyone for your help and suggestions.
