Timing Belt

Hi all, my (sniff...) trusty 98 4R (285k) must be put out of her misery, too much going wrong to try and fix. Have decided to get another one.

I'm looking at at 2001 from used dealer (I know, but it's the best one I've seen)

My real question is, the dealer doesn't know if the timing belt has been done, how can I tell? That sort of thing wouldn't be on a "carfax" I've also been told that there should be a sticker in the engine compartment somewhere, but is there anyway to just look at the engine and tell?

sticker on the timing belt cover, or jot down the VIN and a toyota dealer can check if it was ever serviced at a Toyota Service Center.

besides the sticker, no real way to tell, but for 800 at a dealer they can replace timing belt and water pump, or get the kit for about 250 online and diy

This is it. Also, depending on mileage on the 2001 it might just be worth it to get it done anyway. Timing belt failure will leave you stranded, water pump failure can do a lot more damage on these.
