SEARCH "TIMING BELT 3.4" SEARCH!!!

lots of info when you search but it is 90,000 miles to change it out. you have a non interference motor in there and "could" ride it out until it actually breaks and no harm will be done to your motor. BUT, you will be stranded on the road some where so if you travel the hwy alot, change it...if you travel the city mostly, i would wait a few more miles. i had mine changed at 110,000 and i wish i would have went to 125/150,000. i see guys post those numbers all the time on other message boards.

do you have an owners manual?

My 4runner has almost 116,000 miles on it, I bought it at around 114 K. I have no idea when the timing belt was changed last and never received a manual from the dealership unfortunately.

look at the timing belt cover, some have said that they have found that their's has a "stamp" indicating milleage it was changed.
you could howerver, go back to the dealer and HOPEFULY they could find out if it has been done but there is a slim chance in that!
sucks to bite the bullet though on double work but its better to be safe than sorry. you could remove the cover and see yourself the cond of the belt.

Hey Boss, it's Jeff (deck plate guy).

So you say our engines (mine is an 01' SR5 3.4L) won't be harmed if the timing belt brakes? Only downfall is being stranded? I have 85k on mine now and was starting to get worried that I should do it soon. You think I'm safe to 125k atleast? I will search those posts. Thanks!

My 98 runner has 126500 miles on it and I have not changed the timing belt on it. So I will see how long I can go before I have to change it.

http://www.familycar.com/CarCare/TimingBelt.htm

"There are two types of engines that use timing belts. They are described as: "Interference Engines" and "Non-interference Engines" The difference lies in the proximity between the valves and the pistons. On an interference engine, if the timing belt slips even one notch, the piston can crash into an open valve causing serious engine damage by bending valves and breaking pistons. Non-interference engines will usually not self destruct, but in either case if the belt fails, the engine will immediately shut down leaving you stranded. The link at the bottom of this article will tell you which category your engine falls under.

Timing belts fail without warning and on some vehicles, are almost as hard to check as they are to change. In most cases, your only protection is to change the belt at the recommended intervals. Timing belt replacement is not a cheap job but it is far less costly than the alternative.

Some technicians may recommend that you replace the water pump during a timing belt job even if there is nothing wrong with it. This is because 90% of the labor to change the water pump has already been done with the timing belt job and some technicians consider it good insurance to replace the pump at this time. My feeling is that some water pumps can last the life of the car but many do fail and will cost big money to replace at a later date. So ask your technician what his experience is with the water pump on your model car and look at how long you plan to keep the car. This way, at least you will be making an informed roll of the dice."

Isn't 126500 pushing it, especially if our engines are interference engines?

jev, did you read the post where i mentioned that the 3.4 is a non-interference motor? nothing will happen to the motor if and when it breaks.

(glad the deckplate worked out!)

Actually, on the gates.com website, it shows in fact that "it is" an interference engine. Can you send me your source for this information?

Thanks again.

do a search on yotatech also...lots of mechanics working with toyota and alot of knowledge as far as maintenance goes.

someone even said that gates was wrong in their info...midiwal i believe. call your dealer as well as doing that. tell them to show you where it says non interference. pm some people and see what they say. if you find out other wise please let me know, but, i have gone to the dealer as well and there are a few other sites to check out as well.

I think someone on yotatech pointed out that Gates has been wrong on more than one occasion when declaring interference and non- engines, so I'm hesitant to take their word on it.

There is a post somewhere over there that shows the actual valve and piston clearance measurments, which seems to me to be proof enough that the 3.4 is NOT an interference engine.
