Own a 2000 4TR. Have a problem with smell of gas. Mechanic checked engine, fuel filter and tank, but couldn´t find the problem. Any help on what is causing this problem

I would
think it would have gotten looked at when he checked the tank, but the filler neck in the rear wheel well is in a vulnerable position for rust and corrosion, some have had to replace them. Issue just gets multiplied if you live in the rust belt.

Where is the smell coming from? I used to smell gas on my 4Runner close to the rear. It turns out that the gas cap wasn't sealing properly, permitting vapors to escape the tank. New gas cap and problem solved.
