I'm heading up to Truckee over thanksgiving. Planned route is short-Drive a while to Tinker Knob and hike the rest. My dad takes his truck up there all the time. Just wondering, if there's any truckee guys, i'd like to hear some suggestions. [MENTION=61654]Casper421[/MENTION] ??
I've been up to the prosser, boca area, but wasn't too thrilled there.
Any ideas would be supreme!
It all depends on what your trying to get into. Tinkers know is cool to hike, skinny non challenging trail up with the car. It's been a while. What are you looking for difficulty wise or are you just lookin for a mellow trail to a sweet destination?

Semi-difficult trail. Destination would be a plus! Something I could do stock.
Maybe even something fun to do in the winter? I see you're in truckee, which is where I'm going. any snow present on the ground anywhere?

Eh, not to much snow. There is some tucked away and possible some up Blackwood Canyon in the woods but we have only had one storm that didnt leave us with much precipitation. I dont think you would have a problem running the blackwood canyon OHV trail which is on the West Shore. I was just telling another member about Jackson Meadows, its the back entrance to Eagle Lakes trail and that is an easy trail all the way up that has a lot of little lakes to stop at. You could make it in a stock runner no problem. I know im missing a few trails in the area but cant remember at the moment. Ill brainstorm a little more and post up when I remember.

lol last april I think it was when we got hit with that random rainstorm. I was up there and hit prosser. I had no idea where I was going and ended up in the mx park. lots of exploring there though.
Ill let you know when I'm up there and perhaps we can run our trucks sometime.
Yea thats where I was talking about going @havingfun. Prosser is cool with mud and rain. We go out and play in the dried up lake beds and try not to get stuck then take turns pulling each other out haha. Good times. Give me a shout when you head up this way

I can't make it up for Thanksgiving, but post up the route to Tinker Knob if you do that drive. I would like to see it. Better yet, do a GPS track with a smart phone if you can. I have posted up a couple trails in the are on EveryTrail.com. Check it out if you are looking for trails around Truckee.

Thanks man! Lot's of good stuff it seems. I'll definitely be checking it out. What app do you recommend for the tracking-it seems to be quite a handy one.
I saw you went up carpenter valley road off alder creek drive. I've never driven up there, didn't even know there was stuff up there! I'll definitely be checking that out! Do yo stay up in the places in Tahoe Donner too?

For mapping and making tracks, Gaia GPS is the one I use the most. I find that it has the most accurate maps, most choices of maps and the most features (like letting you download an area so you don't need a cell signal). But for following tracks EveryTrail has their own app that allows you to download tracks from their webpage and follow them on your phone. Even the free version of EveryTrail is decent for making and following tracks.
Yea, I didn't know much about the Carpenter Valley area until I started wandering around there with my daughter. She loves taking the trails in our Jeep with the top off (sorry Toyota fans). Carpenter Valley is a little limited because the upper valley area is private property, which is too bad because there is a lake at the top of the valley that would be awesome to check out. But there are still some pretty cool spots to find back there. We spent an afternoon relaxing in Prosser Creek over 4th of July--didn't see a single other car back there.
There are a bunch of trails on both sides of 89 North of Truckee. And when you get to the Little Truckee River Henness Pass Road goes East and West to provide virtually unlimited possibilities.
My dad has a place in Tahoe-Donner, so me and my family are up there all the time. I was just there this weekend to see him and my brother. We checked out the old train tunnels and snow sheds on Donner Summit off of Old Donner Pass Road by Sugar Bowl. How cool does this look (not my video)?
Unfortunately after being open to the public and vehicles for more than a decade, we found when we got up there that just last fall Union Pacific closed the tunnels to the public. :redbrick: We still hiked though two of the tunnels which was pretty cool--bring a flashlight the one of the tunnels was nearly a half mile long.
Yes, to the SW of Donner lake you can see the tunnels and snow sheds that the trail goes through. The West end of the trail starts up by Sugar Bowl. The pin point at the link below shows the start. The first tunnel goes below the road where the green car is in the pic. You start to the left of the road and below it. That is right where the video link starts.
Of course there is a big barrier stopping vehicles now.
But if you ignore the sign, you can still hike or mountain bike through there. The "No Trespassing" is a little silly because the trail cuts across the backcountry and there are a million places you can hop onto it without seeing a trespassing sign. After going through at least 3 tunnels and a number of snow sheds it ends up at a road somewhere south of Donner Lake.
For Tahoe area trails you should check out Reno4x4.com also. There is a good crew from that site that meet up nearly every Sunday to do a trail run--from very mild to some pretty intense stuff (check out my pics from Delores-Misery). They will let you know what to expect. A guy named Bill "Bitosin" usually organizes the trail runs. And they have an archive of Past Trip Reports that's good for ideas.
I'm glad I have been able to share some useful information. I only ask that you post up any good trails that you do.

I have an android copy of Gaia for a Google Nexus that I sometimes use on the trail and it is called: Gaia GPS: Topo Maps and Trails. At one time there was a Gaia Lite that was a free app with limited functionality, but I guess they got rid of that. Gaia is great for looking at maps, saving maps if you expect to be off the grid and recording tracks which you can upload directly to Everytrail.
Everytrail maintains an online database of tracks that you can upload your trips to (and pictures and a narrative if you want). The easiest way to download and follow tracks from Everytrail is to use their free app--Everytrail for Android. You have to go into Everytrail and create an account but that is free also. The free Everytrail app is actually not too bad for looking at topos and planning trips. So you can start by playing with that for free. There are tons of hiking and biking trips in their database, but fewer 4x4 trips--I'm doing my best to change that. But for the $10 that Gaia costs, I like the extra features.
