You asked in a different thread about snowfall. We're here in Incline Village, and got just over an inch at 6700', and about 3" at our rental at 7500'. Going over 431 to Reno yesterday, there was maybe slightly more at the top, say 4" at 8900'.
I chatted with our Recycle guy, who said they got about 2" in Truckee (Glenshire).
Better yet, this guy does a great job of keeping track of the snow, and predicting it. It's aimed at the ski resorts, but you can translate that to other areas. It's saying we got 5-12" at the Tahoe resorts. The Tahoe Daily Snow | OpenSnow
The weather is cold and really windy, but is supposed to warm up in a couple days. There's a chance of a little snow around Thanksgiving, but I wouldn't count on it yet. Here's the noaa forecast for the top of 80, at 7200'. Noaa is cool that you can pinpoint places, so it's easy to see predictions for a specific location. NOAA National Weather Service
Enjoy! There are some non-technical roads when headed back to the bay on 80, I think starting around Gold Run. It's just a little dirt road that goes right off the highway…I bet if you've been keeping an eye out for tracks you've noticed it. For a while we've been in the minivan every time going past, but I finally got to do it a year ago when loaded up with tools on the way to the south bay. A motorhome was down there, so nothing technical, but just one of those places that you see a set of tracks and wonder. It was cool to get some good sugar pine cones, and I drove along a canal for a while. You can meet back up with a side road that then connects with 80 again.

Thanks for the link to the weather [MENTION=12148]giro[/MENTION]. Yeah I've seen those places off gold run. Also, there's a trail that I haven't ventured far into at the Blue Canyon Exit. There's a airport up there too.

Looks like Reno4x4 is doing a run on Sunday if you are around then-->Eldorado Canyon. . I have always had a good time wheeling with them. Typically it's a good mix of seasoned regulars and newbies.
Regardless of what you do have fun and post pics and maps!

No trip report since we just flew past it in the Sienna, but the run off the side of 80 West bound is roughly 2 miles past the emigrant pass overlook. From the overlook you stay on 80 up the hill, past the truck brake check, and then it's just a little bit further off to the right. It's hard to miss, but I never knew if it ended immediately at a gate or private property. Like I said before, nothing challenging that I found, but it's fun to explore, and driving next to the water channel was cool.

Unfortunately, my brakes were gone, and didn't have any time before I left to replace em.. So I stole my dad's f-150 for the weekend. didn't really do anything as planned 
However, I did check out Carpenter valley road in truckee. Easy trails, they go on forever. Got a chance to play in some snow there. Sorry, no uploads for trails. time and unforeseen occurrence :/

I did my Alturas dropping my daughter off and came out the Reno side. Was in Reno around 6 pm. Called Kalikid and he was sick, so didn't stop on my return to Sac.
This was Friday, and didn't get any messages sent to me to do any sight seeing or runs. I probably would have stayed in Reno if I did.

If anyone is up in Truckee for the holidays, Reno4X4 is planning a snow wheeling run on Saturday. My daughter and I are going to try to make it.

OK, to make you guys feel bad I will have to post some pics. The trip was organized through Reno4x4 and Hills Angles in Reno. There were 7 rigs all together, with me and a guy with a Tacoma representing the Toyotas. I had never been up to the top on Peavine. The scenery is wide open with few trees. And from the summit there was a great view of Reno. Along the way we went through Squeeze Rock (not a problem for a 4Runner) and up (or around) Jeep Eater Hill. Three built Jeeps were winched up JE Hill and me and the Tacoma decided to take the by-pass. So the hill lived up to its name. We took a short side trip to investigate some stopped cars on a ridge--we saw them from miles away because it was so wide open. They didn't need help and were setting up to do some bow hunting.
Anyway good times with Reno4x4, check them out.

Nice pics. Kinda biffed I couldn't bring my runner up, but just actually ended up hitting a little of the rubicon one day to McKinney Lake. We took my cousin's expedition and it did okay. It was sliding all over the place. Then, my friends behind us in a suburban couldnt even get onto the trail. Literally. They only got the front wheels on and that was it. While we eventually rocked him out, meanwhile, 4 4runners blew past smashing through the snow like bosses! Man I wanted my truck!!
IDK if anyone has even tried to hit the rubi during this dry winter yet, but i;'m planning to next month if we continue to not have any snow.
When we went, the trail was covered in snow/ice, but it was easy to maneuver in. A few yota guys I talked to said they had a blast and they went all the way. :O

Just went up the Rubi, couple weeks ago for a quick day trip. Didn't make it to far.
Got to the granite rock area and watch a few of the guys go down, seen all that ice and knew we would have to come back out the same way. Told them if you can get back up here, i'll go in. They didn't make it. I had to winch 3 toys all hooked together back up the hill.

What 4x4 trail gets closest to Tinkers Knob? Can you go up Cold Stream Valley by Donner Lake, or do you have to go around on hwy 89?
I'm going to be up there next week and thought i would check it out.

hey [MENTION=48316]Johnny4runner[/MENTION], you can explore up Cold Stream but it wont lead you to tinkers knob, at least not that I know of and I live literally down the street from it and been exploring it for years. The only way I know of is down hwy 89 like you said on your way to Squaw Valley. There is a turn off and up a dirt road. I checked it 2 weekends ago and the gate was still closed for some reason. Anyway, im guessing its open now since Blackwood Canyon and the other gates around have since been lifted. The trail off 89 is a narrow fire road.

I checked out the trail off of 89 by Pole Creek. Unfortunately the upper section that goes by Tinker Knob is not open until August. So my dog an I took another trail to a dead end and hiked up closest peak. We thought about doing Billys Peak also, but didn't have the time and the way up Billys looked pretty difficult.
Here is my track--I published it on Gaia because it seemed like it made a much better route.

I'll have to come back later this summer once the road to Tinker Knob opens up. It looks pretty cool. I hiked a short section on my way up and could see it in the distance.
