Tint Percentage? Factory?

Factory is 22%...that's what they told me when I had mine installed. The front matches almost perfectly. I would recommend just letting a place do it...tinting is a huge PITA. Plus, most places have lifetime warranties...mine came with one for $68 for both windows. Can't beat that price for the time and frustration I saved myself.

I would say ~50% in the front and ~30-35% in the rear.
I currently have ~35% in the front and ~5% in the rear.
Also, here are your local tint laws (California):
Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows: Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows: Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window: Any darkness can be used.
Your highway patrol police have different regulations as well:

You could very well be right. My grandparents live in Florida, and he purchases cars right off the lot, and his last two cars came with 20% in the rear and 35% in the front, but the same BMWs here (Virginia) have 50% in the front and 35% in the rear. I would need to get my brother-in-law to get his gauge, but you might be right on the 20%.

I beleive the CA law is no tint in the front at all.
Sides and rear do not matter
I may just go and pay for the tint.. I dont mind the front a bit lighter.. Infact I prefer it. I dont want to make the mistake of tinting the front darker.. Its like having a reverse rake. :frusty:

Well, that and if you tint the whole truck one shade, I feel like it makes the front look too dark. And officers basically want to see the driver. I've had 50%, 35%, 15% and 5% on my front windows. I am currently at 35% because I feel it is the best shade. It's not too dark, and also doesn't allow too much light in.
Oh, and I must have missed where you asked if you should do it or if you should get it installed. I would say get it installed, and never look back.
I have a buddy in the tinting business, so it helped greatly with pricing.
Let me see if I can conjure up some old photos of the various shades.
UPDATE:
Front: 15%, Rear 5%
Front: 5%, Rear 5% (Keep in mind the rear looks darker because I'm only giving %'s of tint ADDED, not total tint including factory installed)
Front: 50%, Rear 5% (Pulled front tint after ticket w/ 5% up front)
Also got the windshield, above the AS1 line, tinted to 5%:

Mine came matched to the factory tint, so I assume 22%.
During the day its great, at night its actually a bit too dark on occasion, like trying to back up into a parking spot I have to roll down the window to see anything.
Love the look, perfect during the day, nighttime can be a bit too dark.
I can not even imagine going darker than factory, for me at least the truck would not even be drivable at night.

Well I didn't tint anything, I bought it already tinted.
and yes the front side windows (not windshield) are tinted the same as the factory rear windows.
That looks a a great match with the rears. Do you know what brand of tint that is?

I had mine tested by a tint shop before coming to Belize.
Factory privacy glass is 25% (rear; light transmittance)
Our front windows have aftermarket tint @ 50% (which I think is the max for Cali)

Just for future reference, all of the rear windows on 4Runners are not tinted, they are dipped in dye. There is no layer of tint on them. They are usually dyed at 20%. If you want a perfect match, you have to go 15% on the front two which would allot for the extra light coming in the front windshield.

Thats what i also heard.. So in the rear you have no UV protected since its just a colored glass.. so ive thought about going with 70% in the rears which is almost clear to get that UV protection in rear and about 30-35 in front..

In California I believe it is illegal to tint winshield and front sides over 30%, I don't think there is any restriction on back sides and rear.
I see cars pulled over that have tints on front drivers side all the time

Super dark driverside (and all window) tint is all over the SF Bay Area and enforcement is nowhere to be found. It gives scrawny lil weasels license to be dicks like netbangers behind keyboards. Y'all are just UberEats drivers in Nissans.
