Tint tickets = Utah

I was just leaving school driving down a hill and already had the windows down but the cop said he knew my windows were illegal and busted me for illegal window tint on my windshield(strip) and front windows. They're cracking down on everywhere in utah so watch urself. I talked to my buddy that owns a tint shop here in utah county and he said he's already had a few calls from friends getting busted for their windows

thats not the only thing, make sure you have mud flaps. theyre big on that one.

when i tint mine (if i do) its gonna be to the legal limit, i dont like to mess with cops! i got pulled over dozens of times in my 85 haha never one ticket tho :P
 
If I had them rolled down already I would just hit the window lock switch and say I didn't have windows. Idk about Utah, but in most states it's legal to have a vehicle without windows. I know someone who has just taken the windows out of their doors to correct fix-it tickets for tint. :D
 
I moved from Salt Lake to Ohio a couple of years ago. I got pulled over on 15 to Vegas and St. George all the time. Not that much in the city, though. So I replaced my front 2 windows with 50% tint, which was the legal limit at the time. I have not had trouble anywhere I have went since then. I would like it to match the back completely but I'd rather not get risk getting pulled over.

I dont know if it is still around but Utah Window Tinting on State St in Midvale did my 4Runner and my Volvo wagon I had before that. The did a really nice job.
 
uh oh, i think mine is ok. tint laws or so dumb, instead they should just make it a law to open your windows when you get pulled over or somehing. utah's not even that bad with crime! geez... with the mud flaps do you need front ones too?
 
Doh! I was about to get mine tinted at 35 or 20%. Guess I won't now.... My wife's car is at 50% and compared to the back (20%) it's like it's not even tinted at all. It really sucks when the temps get up to 110 degrees in the summer.

I'm glad they're ticketing for mudflaps, though. I got a nice big crack in my windshield from a lifted Ford on 35's and no flaps.

Semi-OT: Have you guys heard that cars with tint and no side curtain airbags can be very dangerous in an accident? I guess if you get in an accident and you hit your head against the window, rather than it exploding and absorbing some of the impact, the tint prevents it from shattering, so what happens is your head just keeps bouncing off of it. Some victims were found with a flat side of the head where they hit the window multiple times. Not sure if this is true or where I read it. Is this why factory windows just come smoked and not tinted?

From what I was told about tint is that it doesn't keep the window from shattering on impact, it just hold the pieces together.

I am sure you have seen how windshields have that type of layer to keep them together when shattered. The safety glass on the rest of the car lacks this coating so I think it helps keep the glass from spraying all over.

Now if there is proof that it keeps the glass from shattering and makes the car unsafe, the tint industry needs to promptly address the issue. I would want/have my tint replaced with something safe.

Yeah, the windshield has a laminate BETWEEN the outer and inner glass, but IIRC, nothing directly on the outside or inside of the glass (meaning no layer of laminate, which is why you can scrape your windshield with an ice scraper and you don't get scratch marks). This is also why airbags (+ seatbelts) were implemented to prevent a person's face/head from being shredded on the windshield (of course, this is just one of the benefits of having a seat belt and an air bag).

I'm not sure about the whole tint thing. I hope I didn't come off like that was the actual case. I just wanted to know if anybody else has heard of something like that?
 
I have heard something like that before pnut. I'm not sure how true it is, but it sounds logical.

Cars probably don't come tinted from the factory because 1. it would take too long and 2. tint doesn't last forever.

$120 is small compared to Honolulu. Ours is $287 per window.
 
being in the towing world i got to alot of police accidents and have never seen a car that has had tint that it was a problem. tint does keep the glass from goin everywhere when it breaks but the window will still break.
also tint in mass is 35% and normally $250 but they can make it 250 a window if u give them a hard time.
 
I would say the biggest reason tint laws exist is due to officer's needing to see the inside occupants. Tint does however pose a problem with breaking windows. I have been on a few wrecks were we went to extricate the driver and the side glass wouldn't just shatter like it is designed to do. It instead held together in tiny pieces. Not a big problem, just takes a few more hits to fully remove the window. Windshield are a different story, they have to be cut out.

Can I have tinting on the windows of my vehicle?

Utah Law permits the use of window tint on vehicles registered here in Utah. The limitations are as follows. All windshields are prohibited from having window tint, or other non-transparent material placed below the AS-1 line or 4 inches down from the top of the windshield, whichever is lower. The driver and front seat passenger side windows must not allow less than 43 percent light transmittance. All other windows behind the front seat have no minimum light transmittance requirements. That's harsh. I am glad it's only a fix-it ticket here.

Paid $10 for mine, then had it put right back on.
 
HA I've been pulled over like 3 times for my tint in Orem i hate it. Regular tint looks so dumb IMO. I just got pulled over by a Lindon cop last week I'm surprised he didn't catch it those guys are fags they will pull you over for anything
 
He didnt even do a test on my front windows. He just looked at them and said they're to dark and your windshield strip goes down to far past the little line. Luckily he didnt see that my whole windshield has tint on it. Ive been down the road where ive had 5% on my front windows and its not worth it to have to always roll down the windows..Ive loved having 20% recently but im to the point where i still hate rolling down my windows. Im going to do 35% on them now and just hope that i dont run into any problems. The utah front window tint law is 43% on the fronts and as dark as you want on the rear(weird how its some random number)
 
BTW it was only a fix-it ticket. I can either pay $58.00 for the front windows and $58 for the strip..im going to just pay for the strip and get the front ones done at 35%.
