This will not work anywhere. Anywhere that is willing to inspect your vehicle with the front two windows down does not care about your illegal tint in the first place. Just ask around. Go to shops and tell them straight up what you want and they will either say absolutely not or they will do it. If they say no, ask if they know anyone that will. They may divulge some useful information.

Thats the same as here in NC. What gets many people though is they install 35% film over windows that have lighter factory tint already in them. So they end up being too dark when combined and will not pass.

haha exactly, or they get to inspection with a car they bought with illegal tint on it and they get failed. They say, "Well I just bought it like this, what do you mean it is illegal??! I don't understand??"

Yep, that's what happened to me. I bought a used Mazda RX8 for my daughter. The previous owner was in my state and had been getting it inspected in my state. I noticed the windows looked really dark, good but dark, so I asked if she had any trouble getting it inspected. She said, nope it's legal and produced a certificate and receipt showing me that the tint that was installed was 35%. (I bought that car because she had every record imaginable)

I took the car for inspection and the guy comes back to me and said "I can't inspect it with that tint". He had tested it and it was not legal. I showed him the receipt and he said it was probably because the factory windows were already tinted to a degree. So, it was a warm day and I rolled the windows down and took it to the next shop. They passed it and never rolled the windows back up and did not check the tint box on the form. I took it back the same way the following year and they passed it again, but that's when they told me, in so many words, that this would be the last time.

Wow this is one of the only times that the car nazi's in California don't take the cake for stupidness. We dont have yearly or bi-yearly inspections. Only way to get a ticket for your tint is to be pulled over by an officer and issued a ticket. Being that we tint whatever the customer wants at my work we do a lot of full windshields and dark front windows. On several occasions we have removed the two front windows so a customer can get the fix-it ticket signed off (the local CHP station is only 2 miles away) and then come back an hour later to have the tint put back on. In California we have the option to just pay the fix-it ticket without correcting the violation, but that is $225 I think. Since we offer a no fault warranty we remove the fronts for free and then only charge the customer $40 to put them back on. $65 (ticket and re-tint) and two hours of your time is generally cheaper than just paying the violation.

Now that's a sweet deal!! I wish we had something like that around here.

I could be wrong but the front roll ups don't have factory tints just the backs.

Nope, fronts are clear glass, or as clear as automotive glass is, typically has about an 88% VLT(Visable Light Transmission).

Right. So someone may get 5% on their front two and it may read as 3%.

Right, most factory glass has some tint to it, in the glass, not a film applied to it. Put film on it that is rated at 35%VLT by itself and the net VLT could be too dark to be legal. I had my mazda tint replaced and told the guy i wanted the windows as dark as possible but legal and he had to use lighter than 35% to accomplish that. He told me what he used but i cant remember. The nice thing was he offered to stand behind it. So if i still failed inspection, he would make it right at no extra charge. That car is someone elses problem now though.
