Tips for Coating Rci Aluminum skids

I just got my aluminum skids and I want to coat them in black. Need primer before coating? I don’t know much about coating and any tips or guides will help.

This is easy.. Don't coat them LOL. Waste of time. That is the joy of aluminum you don't have to maintain them....
 
then just krylon them.

I keep mine raw, the rest of my rig is pretty much blackd out, so having the underbelly shiney aluminum gives it some contrast.

They won't look good painted black if they actually get used. Just stating the obvious...

Steel skids have to be coated to avoid corrosion, aluminum does not.

Your call... I guess you could just keep touching them up... Not the way I want to spend my time as nobody really sees them but you.
 
My RCI's are steel - I painted them with Rustoleum (BLACK). I have what's left of the SR5 plastic sills just above them (a bit of white with chrome strip) Looks good. Will probably give them a bit more rustoleum a couple times a year.

Aluminum oxidizes immediately which creates a layer (which in turn prevents further oxidation). This aluminum oxide layer prevents paint from staying on and I guarantee that it will flake off sooner or later. If you have no access to aluminum anodizing then prep and clean your plates like your life depends on it and then paint them immediately. I'd find local anodizing place (usually same guys that do chrome work) and anodize it black or any color you may desire. GL
 
^ this. Your only real options are pro powder coating or anodizing. Paint just won't hold well especially with any use as a skid.
 
take that weekend spent on prepping and painting and go wheel those mofos. Get that patina, and no looking back. Find something you wouldn't have driven over before, and take it slow and be happy you bought new skids.

You should have them bead blasted top and bottom and then powder coated a nice satin black. Don't go with gloss black because gloss black powder coating tends to show scratches easier than satin or flat black.

Then have them vinyl wrapped by professionals before you install. Be sure to use anti-seaze on all the bolts so that you can remove them every 3-6 months and repeat.

Your skids will look awesome. Under your rid. WHERE NO ONE CAN SEE THEM.

Please post photos when you are done. I'm sure even if you just paint them they will look great.

sure and I haven't installed them yet because i have priorities. maybe in few weeks. that allows me enough time to add black and protection before installing the skids.
 
Paint can hold onto aluminum just fine, especially if you surface prep with scotchbrite and solvents to make them really clean and then primer/paint.

Anodize dye is not UV stable, so they'll fade after a while (they'll take longer since they're underneath the truck.
