Tire Comparison: Is it worth it?

Hi all:

Really wanted the GY Wrangler Duratracs in 265/70/17 Load Rating C. Especially after reading all the threads on them... However, I was quoted at Costco for BFG All Terrain TA KO at a much cheaper price.

BFG All Terrain TA KO through Costco: $992 including tax, mount, balance

GY Wrangler Duratracs through GY Store: $1190 including tax, mount, balance

Is the Duratracs really that much better than they are worth that much of a price diff? Please give me some helpful advice or pointers.

I am in the same boat as you, what Island are you on. I am on Lanai, and looking at the Dura Tracs or bfg ko's, in 275 65 18. I will have to buy the tires and have them shipped here or go to Maui and pick them up and then pay to have them mounted and balanced here on Lanai with no warranty from costco. I haven't called for a quote yet from costco because I am dreading it.

I am going to keep an eye on this thread to see some of the comments. Wife wants me to go through Costco because of the warranty, but everyone seems to swear by the Duratracs.

Off road the edge would go to the BFGs for durablity but for me it boiled down to overall driving manners and the Duratracs have been very good off road and once on the pavment especially in the wet on the highway the GYs are much more controlled and predictable. You also get a 50k mile treadwear warranty.

Although I prefer BFG even if they were the same price if you have the tires for 4 years the $200 difference is only $50 a year. This is just a different way to look at it.

Had them both. I like the Duratracs better. 200 bucks is a pretty big swing but as mentioned above whats 50 bucks a year over 4 years for the best looking A/T tire on the road. Every time you see a truck with them you will wish you had them!

"looks" and price aside, the major deciding factor should be which tire will work best for the type of wheeling you do, and how much on-road miles vs off-road miles?

I've run them both, and if you get into wet and muddy conditions the Duratrac is night and day difference from BFG KOs. Hands down a better off-pavement tire.

Having said that the prices are insane on the Goodyears. So I will probably not ever run them again.

Prices have been going up alot in the 3 years since I bought my Duratracs which cost me $868 out the door at Discount Tire and that was with replacement certificates too. That will now cost me over $1100.

I just bought duratracs at America's tire(same as discount tire). The BFG was the exact same price. I am running a different size though than you guys so maybe that's why.

i have had both and i like the duratracs alot better . duras are a better off road tire (more aggressive ) . bfg at ko's handle better on road (less aggressive , stiffer sidewall ) .

My BFGs are older, still tons of tread but not sure of age so was thinking this summer about swapping them out and bumping up a tire size. Running 265/70- 17 now and was thinking 285/70-17.

Ive had BFGs ATs on trucks for 20 years, always worked for me on and off road, mud, snow, rain....but I want to try something different.....I have DC FC-IIs on my Jeep and they rock on the road, and off road. I *think* they might be a really heavy tire though not sure, just a hunch. Im torn between getting a very mild AT since 98% of my 4runner will be highway time, but if I wheel it 2% of the time and its airing down for rocks and mild to difficult trails I do not want to have problems.

So lots of folks love the Dura Tracs? Dura Tracs, BFG ATs, I like the look of Rugged Terrains but they are P-rated in the sizes I need, Hankook ATMs work great on my dads Silverado in snow and mud during hunting, and great on road tire....So many choices! I will be watching this thread for input...Hankooks were really cheap a year or two ago and do well in reviews. I am also curious about those Wildpeak tires they might be more affordable...

I will give credit that the BFG ATs Ive had took serious abuse, being an idiot when young burning them off on the pavement, mudding them hard despite being an AT, and I had some on a Jeep that didnt get many miles and they were old and dry rotted and I still aired them down and wheeled them many times without an issue even if that is stupid (and at the time I did not have the internet to know running dry rotted tires not wise).
