ok so im deciding to go for a 285/70/r17 geolander tire from my current 265/70/r17. i want a 33'' tire for a decent price and rating. i am putting in the toy tech 3" spacer lift with the fj rear coils kit. i also have the 1" toytech body lift and spidertraxx wheel spacers. im hopeful i will not have to do trim work. my concern is fuel mileage, also speedometer inaccuracies. anybody running a comparable set up that an offer their .02? thanks!

I'm currently running 285/75/16 Mickey Thompson ATZ's with a spacer lift kit also on FJ shocks, struts and coils. I am not running a body lift but i am running some 1.25" wheel spacers.

I had to push in the front fender liner and also do a little bit of trimming and I still rub a little.

Get ready to stop at the pump more often. I'm getting 13-14mpg which is poor but I'm not surprised. These tires are heavy and the added width creates a lot of rolling resistance.

You and I are in very different climates and elevation so I'm assuming you'll fair a little better than me.

Good luck

Yeah like he said, 285s will be a lot heavier. Most 265s come in a P rated option. Most 285s don't. So you'll likely end up with a LT D or E rated tire...and that's going to add at least 15 lbs. per tire. Your fuel mileage is going to take a nose dive.

And I'll tell you something else. I don't know if you have the Sport brakes or not, but I don't and with stock tires my braking ability is marginal at best. I would be afraid of heavy 33s on this truck without doing a serious brake upgrade. Emergency stops on stock brakes would suck.

Having just swapped to a P-rated 33" tire from an E-rated MT, I say go with the P-rated if you don't "need" the 10-ply or if the tire you want isn't only offered in the heavier load rating.

I had the Cooper STT 285/70/17s for ~8 mths. My avg MPG was right around 16.5-17 with mixed city/highway. Although I didn't necessarily mind it, the ride was definately more harsh/firm (of course). Also, my truck took a decent hit in acceleration but that may not be as big of a deal on the V8 (mines the V6) with the extra torque.

I have recently swapped out to a P-rated 285, Toyo AT II, and love the ride. I feel like i'm getting the benefits of the larger OD tire without as many of the negatives. For reference, the current tire weighs 48lbs while the STTs were 58lbs. My calculated mileage is already back up to 18.5-19 MPG with the same mixed driving. Acceleration is MUCH better as is the ride. Granted this is all common sense but just wanted to give you my experience. Also, keep in mind some of these changes are due to going from the MT to an AT too. In summary, I would say if you worried that much about the negatives of 285s stick to the Ps. Either way, 33s are definately worth it.

I've been running Firestone destination at's for almost 2 years now and love them. They are P-rated and only weigh 44lbs, 6 more pounds than the stock 265/65 at20's. Plus its hard to beat $622 for 4 33" tires! mpg's took a hit but not as much as I expected. I expect a much bigger hit when I upgrade to 285/75/17 km2's.

what kind of rubbing did you get? not as much because its a less aggressive tread?
