Tire help: Geolander AT-S vs. Terra Grappler

I'm looking to put some 285/70-17's on my t4r. I have Tundra TRD struts/coils for the front and ome 890's for the rear coming this week. I'll be adding the 1/4" top plate spacer from ToyTec to level out the setup. So I started looking for tires and found some decent deals on the Geolander AT-S and Terra Grapplers. I'm looking for input from anyone who has actually run either of them and what you think. Would you run them again? How was the tread life? How was the ride? Road manners? Off road capability?

My last set of tires was the Nitto TGs 265/75/16s. Loved them. Great traction off-road, on wet/dry pavement and even in the snow. Superb tire. Even got 70K miles out of them too.

Replaced my Nittos w/ a set of Yoko Geos AT 265/75/16s just a few months ago. Nitto TGs have a more aggressive tread pattern than the Geolanders (as aggressive as an AT tire can be). But the Geos are still relatively new for me, so I have not had a chance to test them out off-road or in the snow. They're great on wet/dry pavement though. Hope to get similar mileage out of them too as the Nittos.

I would have purchased another set of Nitto TGs again, but I wanted something a little lighter on the wallet. I only paid $114.00 a tire shipped to my door for the Nittos...I was in shell shock to see how much they had gone up in price since then. So for about $128.00 a tire for the Yokos, I'm satisfied.

I've got the Geolander ATS on my 97, stock size though, 265/70/16's, I love them, I've had them on for 3.5 years now, probably 25k miles and they still have tons of tread on them, they're wearing great, work great in the snow and rain, on the highway they're nice and quiet, I will certainly buy these again when I need them. I think this is the 4th set of tires I've had on my 4Runner and out of all of them, these will be a repeat. I had the original wrangerls and two sets of Cooper tires and these.....just very pleased with them. I haven't had the nittos, so can't speak to those....

I have the Nitto TGs and overall think they are a good tire. I stepped up to a 285 series tire when I swapped out my rims for 17" Tundra Rims. As already stated they're a pretty solid tire all around as I've used them offroad, in snow/ice, crossing streams...etc.

The only negatives I would give them would be wet traction on pavement and moderate road noise (not a big deal). I think because of the tire compound being a little harder (which allows you to get 60k - 90k miles out of them) they don't have the best traction on smooth wet pavement. I noticed a difference compared to some Goodyear Forteras and Michelins I've owned.
 
I'll play. Had a set of the Yokohama Geolanders on my old Taco. Awesome tire! Preformed well in snow, rain, dry pavement. Only thing I didn't test them out was off road. Ran them for about 10,000 miles before I sold the truck I almost regret getting my BF Goodrich AT rather than those!
 
i had the nittos and loved them they are a great all terrain tire! i have even thought of getting another set just for hwy use
 
Australian 4WD Action magazine recently did a decent AT tire comparision/review and the Yokes scored very well. If I recall they were up against Wrangler Duratracs, BFG All Terrains, Mickey Thomson ATZ and Pirelli Scorpions, there may have been another but I don't have the magazine in front of me. I know that the Pirellis came out on top and the Wranglers on the bottom (but both just barely).

If I remember rightly, the Geolander was top scorer in sand, then I think second in gravel and mud and it was also top scorer in the hill-climb.

Other than that, I don't know much about the Nittos - but cosmetically I find them very appealing!
 
I have the Geolanders, love them great on and off road, snow, ice, mud, dirt and what little sand I have run across with them. I am defiantly sticking with them for a while.
 
I like the Nittos personally; as Rock Slide said, inflation has caught up to the TGs in a big way in the last three or four years.

Either tire will work well for ya.
 
I have the Yokos and they have been great. I have 10-15,000 miles on them and they are holding up great. I have wheeled the snot out of them. I bet I have close to 500 miles of Moab trail time on them. They go well in deep wheeling snow, ride great on road, handle snow on road great (I did have them siped which will improve most tires), balance great, quiet, track straight, climb rocks well.

The down side is that they don't look tuff like a MT or even the BFG AT, mainly the sidewall.

Would I buy them again? Yes, maybe not for the 4runner, I might go to the DuraTrac because of the looks.

Haven't had the TG.
 
I had the Nittos on my Ram 1500 and have Geolanders on my Runner. I prefer the Geolanders personally because the Nittos did not do very well at all in the snow/ice stuff we get here in KY during the winter.
 
I've got the Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S tires on my '97. I'm on my second set. The first set was 265/70r16 C load range w/a 50K mile warranty. I got 62K miles out of them running 34 PSI all around. They still had another 5K of tread on them too.

The new set are 265/75r16's in D load range, and I like them just as much as I liked the first set. I'm expecting another 60K out of this set and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for a second.

Great in snow, great in sand/dirt, OK in mud but the tread gets filled up easily and then they get very slippery. I've run them over tons of rocks, smooth and sharp and they deal with rocks very well. Great puncture resistance, and I've never torn a sidewall. Very quiet on road, vibration free, easy to balance, and you can't beat the price.

As others have said, I wouldn't mind if they had a more aggressive looking sidewall, but what they lack in form they more than make up in function.
 
I've had (2) sets of the ATS and didn't have any complaints with them. I agree with what Bigfish said about the threads filling up with mud.
 
I'm purchasing my 3rd set of TG's next month I'm getting 50K+ out of them in a 295 flavor. I've had quite a few sets of tires and they are by far my favorite.

Thanks for all the input guys. Sounds like I can't go wrong either way really. Also considering the Bridgestone Dueler Revo 2. We have them on the wife's Jeep GC and they have been great.
 
As someone who has the Revo 2s, albeit in P, if you do any offroading in mud, this is not the tire for you. Snow and rain, however, they are pretty good in. I just hate that the tire picks up every little rock in the road.

You have a larger size tire than I, thus you're gonna pay more no matter where you go. Still, I bought my Yokos in Oct/2011 online from Discount Tire Direct w/ free shipping, no tax, plus a $30.00 prepaid visa gift card. Mine were dirt cheap compared to what they cost now for the same size I have. (DTD has the same 265/75/16 for $164/tire now...glad I got mine when I did.)
