Tire help please

I recently purchased my first 4runner. Its an 07 sr5 v6. The stock wheel/tire size according the manufacturers plate on the drivers door says it's 265/70 16. The previous owner put FJ cruiser wheels/tires on it which are 265/70 17. It's time for new tires. Am I ok with getting 265/70 17 or would something else be better?

Also the tire pressure light is flashing on the dash board because the wheels were replaced. Can I reset that or disable it?

265/70/17 is a great size for the 4Runner. Many members use it and consider it the "preferred" size for stock or very mildly lifted 4Runners. They have a minimal effect on the speedo and they tend to be much cheaper than the stock 265/65/17 size.


Do the FJC rims have regular, rubber valve stems or the metal ones (indicating the TPMS sensors are there)? If they are there (metal valvestems) then most tire shops should be able to program the sensors to the vehicle without a problem. Also note the spare tire has a sensor too. The spare must be full and that sensor programmed to the vehicle.


Without knowing what happened at the rim/tire swap it's hard to know what the issue is. Hopefully it'll be easy and cheap. There is a mod for shutting the light off somewhere in this thread, IIRC. If it's a simple reprogram I say it's better to have the system work.

You will get slightly better mpg with the stock 265/65/17 but IMO it doesn't look as good. If you keep the 265/70 I would suggest a 1inch spacer up front to level it out and keep the front tires from looking crammed in the wheel well which some do with larger tires.

Thanks guys. Appreciate it. The stock wheels were 16 inch 265/70 16 not the 265/65 17 though. Does that create any issues? Thanks again.

No issues at all. Your odometer/speedometer will be sligtly off, but not much. A 265/70/16 is equivalent to 265/65/17's. Most guys on here that came with the stock 265/65/17's have upgraded to the 265/70/17's (same width, a little taller though) with no issues at all. I can't forsee you have any issues at all by sticking to that size.
