Tire Help?

I recently bought a 97 4Runner and the tires are the stock size (265 70 R16) with the 16 in. stock wheels. I really want to get some bigger, all-weather tires. I dont do much off-roading, just looking for something taller and alot wider.

Do I have to get new wheels to fit anything else? How do I figure out the max size I can get? Any recommendations for sizes, brands?

ok, newbie wants, wide tires are ONLY good for rock crawling a skinny tire is what you want, unless you are looking for looks over function. Look into Nitto terra Grapplers at 265/75/R16 that will give you the biggest tire you can fit stock on a really really good tire.

Stick with the stock size. If you go up to 265/75/16's, your MPG will suffer (normally a 2MPG drop). You don't need that. Stick to good all-season tires like Michelin M&S or if you're wanting something a little more aggressive (and cheaper), I recommend Yokohama AT-S tires (in 265/70/16). Remember that the 4Runners come with pretty tall tires stock (31").

And, despite the above comment, skinny tires aren't always bad off-road, and wide tires aren't always the best. I'm running 235/85/16's currently (32") and will go up to 255/85/16's (33") as soon as I regear.

i guess i wasnt clear, i meant that offroading is for skinny tires, wide tires have a purpose of rock crawling only. im not a fan of wide tires. i love series rovers and if you notice what they ride on, they ride on pizzia cutters compared to modern tire sizes. i completly agree agree with that thread you posted, i feel wide tires are useless in most any situation. sorry for any misleading.

Yeah, I've seen some Rovers with 235's and they looked great. This size has been my favorite thus far and can't wait to get some 255/85's.

You might could fit a 275, but that's it.

You might want to look at the Revo or Nitto Terragrappler.
