Would a load range D tire be to stiff of a ride for a 96 4runner

Depends on the tire. Brand A might feel noticably stiffer than Brand B, but within a tire brand and model, load range doesn't make a whole lot of difference if air pressure remains the same. BUT, LTs usually should be run at higher pressure than P-rated tires, which does make them feel stiffer.

I run a load range D on my 98 and it is fine. To me I was able to notice a difference in ride based on different Load rating for the simple fact that in order to achieve the higher rating they (the tire manufacturer) create a stiffer sidewall in order to do that. Either by different rubber compound or more ply's and type of material used for them.

I have Es now and they are pretty rough. I had Ds before and they feel like butter in comparison so I think you'll like them.

I've run load E rated tires ever since I bought my truck. D... no worries.
