I have a set of brand new Duratracs on my rig in a 285/70/17. When I am at about 35-50MPH I have a pronounced pulsating hum coming from the tires. I realize that these tires are going to make some noise (a constant humming) however, I am wondering if I have a tire that may have a manufacturing issue with tread inconsistency or something..? Or is this normal? I don’t have any unordinary vibrations or shaking going on. Its purely audible. Thanks for any info!

It is probably just the normal off road tire hum. It usually gets worse as the tire wears. You can not expect that tire to be as quiet as a street tire.

Just got this done about 20 miles ago.
Could be but the uneven hum was not there before I installed the new lift, wheels and tires. Also, I am only at 20k miles on the odo (doesnt mean it couldnt be a wheel bearing but I think with the lower mileage its less likely).

Yep I agree, I dont expect it to be as quiet as the stock tires. I was just wondering about the pulsing humming. I would think it would be an even hum if everything was kosher.

I have the same tires on my rig and have that hum. It's because it's an aggressive A/T tire, almost a M/T tire. That's the nature of the beast. If you wanted something quieter then switch to something more mellow like Firestone Destination A/T's or Nitto Terra Grapplers. Duratrac's are the most aggressive tread A/T tire out there in my opinion. And oh yeah, I love them! Hum or no hum, they're awesome....Just turn your stereo up and you'll be fine!

I have had duratracs on my rig for a little over a year/22k miles, and the only hum I've ever had is also at about 35-40, but mine is a consistent constant hum, not a "pulsating" one. I would see if one of your tires wasn't balanced properly, or perhaps one of your wheels isn't true? Idk, but I'd probably get it checked out if it is "pulsating"
Like I said I dont mind the constant humming but that "wob-wob-wob" noise makes me think something is either not balanced properly or there are some manufacturing tolernaces in the tire that were off. The pulsating humming goes away over 60, at 70 it is a nice consistant hum. I did get to try them out this past weekend and they seemed unstoppable on the trail.. big wet, slick rocks, creeks, little bit of mud and some hill climbs... the Duratracs kicked ass.
That is a good idea. I may have them re-check the balance on the tires (I just had them done with the alignment 60 Miles ago).

I've had mine for over a year, and yes they make a humming noise, but I get no pulsating noise with mine, just a nice steady hum that you eventually tune out to. I'd get them checked to make sure you don't have a problem.
And yes, they kick ass on the trail - I'm continually impressed by the beating they can take from the rocks in Colorado!

I have the Duratecs on my 4runner - 285-70-17. I get the pulsating deal on mine, but only when it is cold. I just started noticing it more now that the weather has cooled off here in Colorado. It goes away after a while. I'm wondering if the tires need to warm up? I am planning on getting it checked out at a mechanic to elimate bearings, etc.

Flat spotting in cold weather is common. Goes away after a little bit.

Did you ever figure out the issue? I'm getting the same thing in my 1999 4Runner with 265/75/r16 BFG A/The KO2s!
