Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

The 2004 4Runners have this feature as standard equipment. Has anyone changed rims (such as winter rims), installed conventional rubber valves, and had to deal with a flashing or steady illuminated dash lamp indicating a malfunction in the TPMS system?

Do a search, I remember someone posting about that.

They were speculating they had to switch over the valve stems or something. I guess they use special monitoring stems or something.

From what I gather, it is a "average" monitoring system and it can be carried over to different tire/rim combos.
Maybe Toyota sells extra valve stems with the monitoring system in it?

Thanks for your reply. Toyota Canada wants $167.00 each for the steel valves with transmitters. There are none in stock in Canada. The 'fitting kit' is about $9.00 each, which I suspect, enables the transfer of the steel valves to other rims.

It is my intention to buy steel winter rims to mount my 245-70 R16 Bridgestone Winter Duelers onto (from my 2001 Pathfinder). I will have about a 3.8% speedo error for about 5 months of the year.

I guess I will be the first to see what happens when conventional rubber valves are installed in a system designed for wireless transmitters?
