My mechanic says all tire pressures are ok but the light comes on soon after he resets it. How can I reset it myself? Ultimately, what is that causes this false positive reading?

Uh that sucks. I filled and checked all 5 tires. All at 35 PSI and light is still on.
Toyota's TPMS system doesn't have a reset button. The 4th Gen 4Runner doesn't have a button at all, but other Toyota models do have a button that lets you change the pressure below which the light comes on. It's a common misperception that it's a reset button because it makes the light go off. But all that's really doing is lowering the warning level for the next time you have a problem.
As was said above, getting all 5 tires above 27-28 psi will make the light go off on its own if the problem is simply a low tire. If that doesn't do it, then the system might think there is a malfunction.

Same here... Firestone damaged mines too and I also had the VSC TRac light on after installation of new tires. I ended up having to go to the dealer for them to reset it because Firestone was unable to do it. $210 for both lights. Of course Firestone issuing a refund for that expense.
For future reference if any one goes to Firestone to get new tires for the 4runner...expect to get TPMS light on or even VSC Trac lighst on as well. Dont do it unless they are gonna pay your bill at Toyota for the reset. I love my new tires they are way better than stock but the hassle they put me through made me decide to close my account with them.

Wonder if that counts for Bridgestones as well. Thats what i had put on a year ago with new TPM sensors
So you have new sensors? Are the old tires with the old sensors sitting in the garage? If those old sensors were not deregistered when the new ones went on it could be the old tires are a little low and your system is picking up the reading when you get home (mine can sense my summers in the garage from outside) and throwing a light. A fault in the system throws a flashing light but if one of your sensors is misreading pressure as too low that could put up a solid light too. At least you know all your pressures are ok - the light does not affect anything else so you can just get it checked out next time you are getting it serviced.

So, the tire pressure monitor only cares about five signals. Which means you can rotate the tires and not worry about resetting anything because the spec's the same for all five -- 32 p.s.i.
I searched high and low on the '09. Couldn't find anything nor does the manual say anything. So I suppose that's the case.
The Tundra's different as the pressures differ front to rear. A tire rotation requires a reset (the button is to the lower right of the steering column).

Do I need the dealer to program the tpms for a new tire? I bought my 06 4runner and it didn't have a spare tire so that's why I thought the light was on. So they took a full size spare off a 4wd model with different style factory rims, and they light still is on. Is the dealer the only place to have this done?

Drivers side rear sensor was bad. Sensors are only 1 year old (WTF) from Bridgestone dealer. Fixed now, light gone.

Forgot to mention that after the TPMS sensor reset , the VSC TRac Trac Off lights were still on. Thanks to this forum and after asking my buddies and using the search tool I came across the Zero Point Calibration Thread and suggested to the dealer to perform one and that was it. Problem fixed!...It saved me a third trip to the dealer. In total I went Three times to Firestone and twice to the Dealer.
