tire question

hey everyone...my 99 4runner needs some new tires, and i've been doing quite alot of lurking the past week trying to figure out what my best option is...

i live in chicago, drive alot of highway miles..just about never offroad, and probably won't be starting anytime soon...so this in mind, i'm having second thoughts about the revos, since they seem to be the best option according to most on the board...snow performance is a minor concern, since it doesn't snow too much here in the city, and the roads are usually cleaned pretty quickly...mainly, i'm concerned about the street performance of the tire, road noise, decreased acceleration and whatnot that i've been hearing about the revos...

my other option right now is the dueler h/l alenza...has anyone had any experiences with this tire? looks like it gets pretty decent revies on tirerack...

any advice would be greatly appreciated..

Michelin LTX MS....

Good all season road tire. Lots of older 4Runners use them and they have very high ratings in the Tirerack review site.
 
made an informative phone call to tirerack today, and now i'm leaning a little towards the revos...after reading everything on this site, i almost feel like i'm missing out if i don't get them...heheh...

anyone with revos on their 3rd gen care to comment?

also, i know they look sweet on a 4th gen, but anyone got any pictures of revos on a 3rd gen? i'm kind of curious to see how they look...

well, i bit the bullet and did it..got revos on my 4runner today...very pleased so far, rides alot nicer than my old factory dueler h/t tires...

I run about 32-34 on each corner on those Dueler H/T 840s that came from the factory.

When I say I go off road, I do some trails, graded fireroads, washboards, some broken trails (Class I-III) but no more than III. Class I is anything a 2 wheel drive sedan can do. Class II is for vehicles with higher suspensions but may require some 4x4 capability. Class III is for more dedicated vehicle like Jeep or 4Runner with stock 4x4 but does not require modified runnign gear. Class IV is for modified vehciles with lockers, winches, extended suspensions, and one should stay with a group for those excursions with significannt body and driveline damage a very real possibility.

Anyway, Class I-III really does not need adjustments in tire pressure. Airing down is for steep rock climbing where the tire can flex around the rocks and use the shoulders to pull and grab for traction. Airing down also increases the footprint so prevent sinking in soft sand. Howeve,r once you air down, you also need to air up.....most hardcore Class IV drivers will have an onboard air compressor to quickly air up.

Secondly, our stock tires are not those oversized floatation tires. You just won't get too much airing down on 265/65/17 or 265/70/17 as you do with the 33"-40" tires. They have veyr flexible and tough multi-ply sidewalls that are made for airing down. Dropping the air on our wretched stock tires will bulge out the sidewalls and present a nice thin sidewall for rocks to tear into and puncture. Those Dueler H/T also lack a tough shoulder to really do much when aired down. Being rather skimpy on the sidewall, you just expose more wheel to be damaged...That's why you find those real off road tires with gnarly knobs on the shoulders.

So......I just ride it out at the normal tire poressure. The carcass on the Dueler H/T actually has 5 plies: 2 polyester, 2 steel, and 1 nylon, but only two plies on the sidewall. So why not use the tread as it is the strongest layer to handle offroad?

Just a few more months to wear out the Dueler H/T and I can get some real A/T tires for my Runner.
 
what do you they mean a hot tire vrs a cold tire? They check the pressure only when the tire is cold.

What difference does it make?

And what kinda of pressure do you run in your 265/70/16 4Runner tires? thanks!

Check your pressure after your vehicle has not been used for several hours and not parked in the sun. Heat causes the air to expand, which increases pressure.
For a starting point on air pressure, use what is recommended on the inside (driver side) door panel; usually 35 psi. Most of the time, this will be correct for factory size tires.
For every day driving, you want to wear your tires as evenly as possible. A good air pressure check for even wear is to draw a line across your tire with chalk, then drive it a short distance to see where the chalk is not rubbed off (this assumes correct alignment), you may want to adjust accordingly.

I do not have an compressor so I usually just drive to a gas station and fill up there. I try and do it first thing in the AM when its cool. The gas station is probably .5 miles away.

Would I still get accurate readings or would this drive makke it "hot"


Also what happens if you run says 40PSi compared to 30PSI. What effects happen to gas mileage and wear?

A 1/2 mile will not cause that much heat build up first thing in the morning.....
Running higher pressure will generally cause your tires to wear more in the center and give a rougher ride. It may give a slight increase in MPG.
I usually run 36 to 38 psi; I tow often and the extra pressure helps with the additional weight on the rear tires.
 
Just look out when the tire installers inflate it...

Time after time when I ask the tire guys what much they inflated it after mounting a new tire/repairing a flat/something like that, they say, "Oh, it's at 65 psi." I tell them that is wrong. It should be 32-34 psi. Then they point out to me the markings on the side of the tire where it says 65 psi. Then I try to explain to them, with the veins on my neck bulging and my face getting redder and redder, that THIS IS FOR MAXIMUM LOAD WHEN YOU ARE LOADED OR PULLING THE MAX. The NORMAL pressure is 32-34 psi, maybe 36 psi on an LT tire, but NOT 65 PSI!

What pressure should I run for offroading. most of it is dry, hardpack, sand and rocks. no wet stuff.

I found 40psi to be perfect. I tend to put a lot of demand on my tires. Anything less then 40, the ride seems to be sloppy.

If you are wearing the center of the tire faster than the sides, you're over inflated.

If you are wearing the sides out fastser than the center, then you're under inflated.

In between these two....do yo like the ride comfort? Is it too stiff or too sloppy?

Adjust to suit taste.
