Tire Question

Hey guys, gotta question regarding the size of tires I can use. I know topics like this have been covered but I don't think this exact question has been answered.

I'm trying to put some bigger tires on my 4R now that it was the 3" lift. I wanted 285/70/17's but was told that I would need wheel spacers to fit those. Is it the "285" thats too big or the "70" thats too big for the wheel wells. Discount Tire said he hadn't heard about this problem so suggested I go with 275/70/17. Would these fit without spacers? What's the biggest I can go without spacers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry again if this has been discovered. I searched but to no avail.

I believe the problem with the wider tires is the tire hitting the UCA, not the wheel well necessarily. I recall reading that 275's are the widest you can go without greater offset wheels or wheel spacers.

It also depends on the tires you're going with. I was able to up-size to 70 series tires with no lift and did not experiencing any rubbing. However, there have been people that went with the same size BFG AT KO that had minor rubbing issues.

You'll probably have to push the front of the wheel well forward a bit and maybe do a little trimming so your new tires don't rub at full tilt. J.A. did a great write up on how to do that on his website under the wheel spacer section. I need to do the same thing because I'm getting wheel spacers put on next month when Slee gets them in from Spidertrax and from what I've read I might experience some rubbing after the spacers are installed.
